laptop start up problems

As a possible way to save what I have on my harddrive, I've now got a hard drive docking station -> CnM Lifestyle Products - Technology for everyday people!

I was hoping that I would be able to just plug it all in to my spare PC and I'd be able to access my files from the laptops harddrive. However it's not working, the PC recognises that the doking station is connected but I can't access the files.

When I go into My Computer and click what is supposed to be the laptops harddrive, I's just asks if I want to format it.

I'm not sure where I'm going wrong.

I hope that helps.

Ok I think I am with you, you are trying to copy/save from the docking station to your external or your second PC. Is this right?

Do not format your lappy HDD this will definitely destroy all data on it

Does the HDD from your external fit in the Docking station this might be a way to test it. Your lappy HDD might be the problem as it should show straight away.

If you get the option over the docking station try right clicking on the lappy drive and selecting properties, tools and then check for errors don't forget to tick the boxes.

Thats right. I was hoping to copy from the Hard Dive in the Docking Station to my 2nd PC.

Unfortunately I don't have any HDD to test it with besides my Laptop.

When I plug it in My Computer comes up with 2 more drives, System (G:) and Local Drive (H:), G is empty and H just prompts for formatting.

Yes these are your two partitions

Did you try my last to check H:\ ??

You get no option to open it??

Hi Ladyluck,

You can use this free program to copy the contents of your laptops HD onto another one one - needs to be the same size or bigger.

EASEUS Disk Copy: Free Disk Copy, Disk Clone, Partition Copy Software. Sector by Sector for hard drive backup freeware.

You need access to another pc to download the .iso file and burn it to a cd.

This is a bootable .iso so don't format the recordable cd - if autoplay pops up, just close it. If the machine you are using doesn't have an .iso burner you can download this free one

Active@ ISO Burner. Data CD DVD burning software. Write ISO image to CD,DVD,CD-RW,CDR,DVD-RW.

Place the cd you have made in the drive on your laptop and select Boot from cdrom drive in the Bios - instructions are at the Easeus site - it's very straightforward.

EASEUS DISK COPY2009-01-02_181727.jpg

Then when you restore your machine back to factory settings, you will have saved the contents to an external source from which, with any luck, you can get back the bits you want.

Hope it helps

The drive is corrupt. That's why the guy wanted to charge you $100 to recover the data. They use a forensic program to extract data. There are programs that purport to do this that you can get, I don't know how well they work but Data Recovery is the only way to get your stuff back.

Thank you for your help everyone. :D

Unfortuantely I think my poor laptops given up. I put the Hard Drive back in all prepared to do a Full Destructive Recovery and I can't even do that now. I must have put the Hard Drive back wrong or something because I can't do anything now, just get a Boot message talking error.

To the repairs it goes I think!
