laptop randomly shuts down not overheating

You and me both. *sad face* Is it possible for the hard drive to overheat?

OK, so then where do I go from here? I"v read about people "reapplying thermal paste" and that solves the problem. I've never tried tried, so should I? And what if it keeps over heating? How do I choose the right thermal paste and what are the differences between thermal pastes if there is any? someone educate me! Lol.

Ok, so I am working on a laptop for my buddy's wife. It is a hp pavilion dv9700. Obviously enough the title explains it all. I have blown canned air through it and it seemed to run for about 3 hours in safe mode while I defraged it. Logged back on and tried to preform update to sp2 and crashed in the middle. Luckily it turned out just fine. I don't believe it's due to overheating because the bottom and the keyboard aren't hot, at least not compared to any other laptop. I had to edit it because she used her first and last name as the user. And also she actually has 4gb of ram installed, there is just 3 because I tired to replace it with my own as previously stated. P.S.
I have read some stuff where its the thermal paste. How would I go about replacing that?? And is that a symptom of anything?

And when I say "shutting down", it shuts off. No log off screen, no BSOD (blue screen of death), just off.

And It's not when it's normally running when It's shutting off. It's shut off in safe mode and I have even seen it shut off on the screen where is says "press F2 to blah blah blah" when you first turn the laptop on.

Ok as Much As I hate to tell you but my fiancees brother had this same laptop. well he did some reserch. it was hp's fault something is warped inside and its a pain to fix because the whole thing must be striped. sorry to tell you this.

Not necessarily
Try with the pad first, if not good enough you can go with the paste. Try one thing at a time.

Im giving you the advice that I would take. Try one step at a time. If the pad does not work, you can try paste. Dont know if you saw it in my ariticle, clean the inside. That is the most common cause of overheating.
