Any program that has to gleam information from any device on the motherboard has to know how to access that information, the address range(s) of the device(s) and what corrective adjustments (including scaling) are needed in order to be able to display information from and/or control the items connected to that device. Just like drivers, the program has to understand the hardware on the motherboard. Think of it this way - installing an incorrect driver, e.g. an AC'97 driver instead of an HD one (or vice-versa) will not work because it doesn't understand the hardware. The same can be said of hardware monitors. Of course, many of these can be configured to work - you may have to change some settings in a .inf file, for instance. Instructions should be provided with the utility or on the developers website. One mistake many people make with this type of utility is that they do not restart their system. Many of these utilities employ low-level drivers (hence why you are faced with a UAC prompt when you install) which need to integrate themselves into the kernal and other system files. This cannot be done while the files are in use.

But not having any type of temperature monitor/fan control bothers me. I've had problems with this machine overheating before (with an older video card). Dell has the fans kicking in way too late to be effective, and there is no way to control them in the bios.. I don't mind the noise of the fans running as long as I know my system won't overheat..

How much does it cost to get a driver signed by Microsoft for Windows Vista? I can't get any other programs to control my fans, I may just get the I8kFanGui's driver signed so I can use it..

Sorry Matthew but I dont think its that simple.

Have you tried this pay program it works well with x64 vista, unfortunately it will only show you temperatures and fan speed (If it is compatible with your hardware) you will
not be able to change fan speed with it.

Before you buy, it is a test version, but some functions are disabled. Should still be good enough to see if it will work for you or not.

Unfortunately lappys are not supported like desktops

you can try what most folks are doing restart and then press F8 and the go to disable driver singing enforcement
