Hi,
I recently installed Windows Vista ultimate.
I have random drops from Internet, the only way to fix it is by rebooting the system. i tried disconecting the modem, restarting the modem, logging off from my user, nothing works. Only rebooting.

I have a USB modem ( i know it´s not the best but this never ever happened on XP) and i´m using Vista ultimate. I don´t have any fancy network, just my pc conecting to internet threw the usb adsl modem.

I tried pinging Google and it was successfully. But Firefox, neither IE worked :(

Any idea?

I have the same issue too. If I'm downloading a file at the moment of the drop, it continues downloading, but I can't acces any web page or log into Yahoo! Messenger or Live Messenger.

My Computer

yeap, it´s really weird.
Because if i ping Google i can sent and recieve 100% packages.

actually i have another pc sharing my internet, the other pc is on XP, if i go to the other pc, i can browse internet without a problem!

so far the only solution is to reboot my pc... amazing.. i´m having much more trouble with this OS i´m thinking of going back to xp.

My Computer

I've battled this problem since mid November, I never had no problems until then, using Vista 64. What I did, which helps get rid of most of this for me, if not all of it, was reinstall QOS Packet Scheduling for my onboard Nvidia Gigabit lan, as before I didn't have it installed.

From what I have seen on my own system, is that Vista needs QOS packet scheduling to maintain a stable connection, to your router if you are using a router, which has a built in firewall.

Contrary to what other people on the internet, websites, and magazines say, having QOS Packet Scheduling installed and running, does not use the reserved bandwidth, unless you are running a QOS enabled application.

I found this out, in the Microsoft knowledge base. What surprises me, is that I went around with this with my cable ISP, and the idiots on the phone, couldn't even tell me to reinstall QOS Packet Scheduling, and input the domain name, and DNS server numbers in to my router.

I hope none of you uninstalled QOS Packet Scheduling from your nic properties.

I´m not using a router neither a Geforce Motherboard based.

As i explained above i just have My Modem directly to the pc and then i share my internet connection with 2 other pcs, (1 is the xbox360 actually).

When i loss connection, i´m still able to ping to any website on the net.. and i can even browse the internet on the other pc (xp OS btw).

really weird.

i´m on ADSL btw and on the network properties i don´t have QOS Packet Scheduling enabled. (it´s unchecked, should i check?)

My Computer

I would check it, and just let it be. It won't do anything unless you are using a QOS enabled program. My XBOX 360, best I can remember was able to get on the net during this time I had my troubles.

I almost switched to DSL, and now that I discovered this stuff on my own, I'm glad I didn't.

Even with the modem hooked directly to your PC, QOS Packet Scheduler should still be checked. Unchecking it or removing it does absolutely nothing to improve your ADSL speed. I found this out the hard way, with my cable internet connection.

I discovered that by not having QOS Packet Scheduler checked and running or uninstalled completely, I have a lot of trouble with random disconnects from the net with my computer.

I share my internet connection between 3 devices, one is my desktop pc, second is my laptop, and the last one is my XBOX 360.

Have you tried locating updated drivers for your modem?

Do you have any firewall software installed?

My Computer

No, no firewall. Just windows vista´s

actaully my system is very clean... i did my fresh install about 2 weeks ago... after that i did windows upate, drivers updates and 4 or 5 hotfix.

beside that, i didn´t install anything.

the network also is very simple... PC connected to a USB modem. and sharing threw ICS 2 other pcs (one is the xbox360)

No idea why this is happening :(

Just trying to help diagnose the problem. Some common steps that I would take, and you may already have:

1. Delete/uninstall the device from Windows and let Vista re-detect it.
2. Disable ICS for a period of time and see if the problem still crops up.
3. Call my modem manufacturer and inquire about this. It doesn't sound like it's the modem's fault - but it may be a known problem that they can help with.

Update, I had a disconnect from the net again, and ended up having to shut off my computer for awhile, before I got my internet connection back. I'm so disgusted with Nvidia's NForce Networking, that I'm either looking at getting a network card that uses an Intel or Realtek chipset, or a motherboard with P35 or X38 chipset on it, and giving up SLI.

To me running SLI simply isn't worth it anymore, to put up with getting bumped off the net all the time, even on Vista 64.

Only other option is to reformat and reinstall WindowsXP.

Well, I've been using a nvidia based board for 6mo now, and haven't had any problems at all. But I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. If I had to chose a new NIC, I'd go with an Intel, though. Good luck!

What finally fixed things for me, was I ended up dumping the Belkin router I had, and went back to Linksys. The Belkin Wireless G router I had, was nothing but a piece of junk, with it's history of overheating and random disconnects.

I ended up on Monday, buying a Linksys WRT54G version 8.0 Wireless G router.

I've got a similar problem, I think it's related to my onboard NIC.
I'm running:
Ultimate x64 and my ASUS mobo has a
Marvell Yukon 88E001/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ehternet controller
Trend Micro for my firewall.

It randomly disconnects the internet. I can fix it by 'fix & repair" and resetting my LAN connection.
I've got my DSL running to a linksys wireless router then to my PC. When it dies for the PC I can still access the internet wiorelessly from a laptop.
I've updated the Marvell driver, but that didn't seem to change anything.
I also verified that I have the QOS packet scheduler active.
I'm wondering if buying a new NIC would help or ifd there's some setting I've got wrong.
Any help is definitely appreciated!

If a Windows 'fix and repair' does the trick, then you're not being disconnected from the internet; you're being disconnected from your LAN. There is a difference, and it is not unimportant. ;)

Have you looked for new firmware for your router?

One of the problems with wireless is that at times two devices just plain don't work well together for no good reason. (Well, the actual reason is that almost none of the manufacturers adhere to wireless standards 100%)

Your best bet for smooth wireless operation is to use products from one manufacturer, only. Peronsally, me feelings on consumer grade products is that they're all about equal in quality. D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, whatever... they're all crap. But if you want that crap to work, stick with that brand. Manufacturers don't tend to test nearly as thoroughly with stuff from other brands as they do their own. Go figure.

My Computer

I ended up getting an Intel D975XBX2 motherboard, due to the various problems I had with the P5N32-E SLI, and gave up SLI.

I've had enough trouble with 3rd party lan chipsets, espicially Nvidia's, that I've lost faith in them. The other problems I had with the previous motherboard were it overvolted my memory to 1.9 volts automatically, and lately it started the BSOD business.

I won't know for awhile as I'm testing things out, if my mess with getting disconnected all the time went away or not, as I was always having to reset the cable modem lately, and for the most part the problem went away, when I replaced my router, as my wired lan is an Intel Gigabit Lan now.
