Installation Adobe Air

Somehow I can't install my adobe air update. I got a message saying ''There's been an error during the installation of Adobe Air. Possibly the owner doesn't permit the installation. Seek contact with the owner''. (translated from Dutch). I know that recently I tried to change my vista theme which didn't work out and I had to use my recovery disc to get me back on my computer. After that recovery I found that most administrator settings had changed. I don't know if that has anything to do with the installation of Adobe Air. Can anyone please help me? I would also like to know how to get my administrator settings back to default.

Thanks in advance,
Robin

Hello Derekimo,

I'm stuck on step 1 already on the link you gave me. I can't run the command prompt as an administrator. The right click menu doesn't show that option. I tried all 4 possibilities given. Plus I remember that with trying to install a new theme I had to fix things as a trustedinstaller. And I think the trustedinstaller (or the recovery disc) changed my administrator settings. I got some administrator settings back but not all. So what should I do next?

Kind regards,
Robin

O.K., Since I'm not sure Which administator settings you do have, I would suggest a sfc /scannow. This also needs to be ran as administator, if you can't do that, try to run it in safe mode, there's a note at the top of this tutorial about that,
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html?ltr=S

And in case it has to go beyond this, do you have the vista disk?

scf /scannow couldn't be done in normal mode nor in safe mode because I can't run the command prompt as administrator. I do have the Vista Home Premium disc with 32-bit software and service pack 1 included (though my computer says I have service pack 2) and the Anytime Upgrade on it.

Welcome Voyager,

I am sorry that you are having these problems. Derek has asked me to try and help. His suggestion on doing a new install may, unfortunately be the correct course of action. Before we go to that extreme, lets give this a try. Vista has a secret, that MS does not share, it is the secret Administrator account. Access it, try in safe mode if needed. The super administrator has the power to make things work, try this.

Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Forums

It works the same in Vista as it does in 7.

Thank you Richard. I will certainly give that a try first. I was also thinking of creating a new user account. Would that work?

That would have been my next suggestion. Lets try every possiblity before we reinstall. Unfortunately, Derek may be right, there is only so much that we can try. Post back.

Hello Richard,

Enabling the built-in administrator account didn't work because Vista Home Premium doesn't support the local users and groups manager (could there be a way to bypass that?) and it's still not an option in my right click menu to run the command prompt as an administrator. I tried to create a new administrator account as well but it seemed to have the same functions as my normal administrator account or maybe I forgot to do something there. I was thinking whether the trustedinstaller could be of any use in my problem. It shouldn't be so hard to get my administrator settings back to default.

Great! We're getting there. I can now start the built-in administrator account. But I'm uncertain what to do next. Because I still can't run the command prompt as an administrator. Maybe I'm overlooking things. Can you please assist me with that? (preferably in details, step by step). I have 4 administrator accounts now. The one with my name and administrator under it. The new administrator one. ASP.NET and guest. I tried to delete the new administrator after I couldn't figure it out. And I didn't really know whether I should or not.

Kind regards,
Robin

Hello Derek,

That didn't work. I changed from trustedinstaller to admninistrators and I still can't run my command prompt as an administrator. However, I could open the cmd.exe from there and it seemed like an administrator command prompt (c:\Windows\System32>), but I couldn't open any of the commands you gave me (system error 5 access denied). It did remind me of some things though. After the recovery disc done his job (as mentioned in my first message about the adobe air installation) I couldn't open anything that was administrator related. I found out that the trustedinstaller was responsible for that. Some website taught me how to change ownership in the system32 file properties. Some administrator settings were back as normal after I did that. And I remember I modified my right click menu and deleted some unused functions there. I don't remember if I deleted the administrator link. (I tried all this in my default administrator)

In your second message you told me you weren't sure about my administrator settings. Can I give you extra information about my administrator settings and how?

I really hope I gave you some useful information here and I would like to hear from you again.

Kind regards,
Robin

It sure sounds like something is really messed up with your registry, Lets see if there are any nasties in there, Download MalwareBytes AntiMalware, Run the update feature, then Scan. See if it finds anything.
Malwarebytes.org
Just download the free version, it says it costs but thats for real time protection.
I'm going to see what I can find out about that error you mentioned above.

Also Have you tried disabling UAC and trying those commands in any of the other admin accounts, Worth a try.
Derek

One more thing, Which A/V and Firewall do you use?

Well to be honest Robin I'm at a loss, if you want to wait and see if someone else has something to try, you can do that.
If it were mine I would go with the reinstall, Just back up everything you want and bite the bullet, at least you'd be starting fresh.
Sorry I couldn't help you with this.

If you decide to go with reinstall, If you use the http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/241565-custom-install-vista.html
You can check the windows.old folder after you are done to see if there's anything you still want before deleting it.
Good Luck, Derek
