Not sure what to do now,

I just got the recovery discs in the mail, so I put the first in and it says the following
This program recreates a factory image on your hard drive.
The recovery process has two phases

Recovery preparation
Hard disk will be reformatted and all files required to recover image will be copied to the hard disk

Recovery installation
Applications/drivers are installed and content customized for your computer.

I am worried if I press next it will just reformat the HD and erase the data that I am hoping to retrieve?

Is it possible have the broken laptop running off the cd drive with Ubuntu in it and then use a usb to download shadowExplorer?

thanks again

Some more information,

I was never able to move the files to my external HD and I hope I do not need to because the directions posted by Townsbg seem like they are in another language to me, I do appreciate all the help thus far.

Moving on.

If someone could just maybe list the steps on what I should do from here, I feel like there are several options on how to do all this, I am not sure if there is only one correct way or many this is my first time.

Here are the things I am unsure about:
1) Do I have to move the files off of the broken laptop in order to run shawdowExplorer
2) If yes does it matter what operating system I use on a working computer to run shawdowexplorer to try and fix the files?

Thanks again for all the help

If you cannot even load shadow explorer on the laptop, it cant be used. If you cant boot, there is no way to get the files. You can get them with Ubuntu, but your computer must be able to load the OS.
