How to get good vid on HDTV Plasma

Can you get 1080p and 1080i quality across the DVI to HDMI cable? Or is it limited to 720p?

My blu-ray and HD DVDs are 1080p/24. HD TV is mainly 720p. Some of it is 1080p on a few HD channels. Do you use optical cables to get the sound?

I usually get DTS 6.1 ES movies. I just upgraded my receiver to the AVR-347. It was $550. Cheaper than the AVR-325.

My old receiver did DTS 6.1 ES and DD 5.1 EX along with most other sound formats. Maybe you should look into a new reciever and build around it.

I know the feeling. I dropped $6000+ into my workstation upgrades since January. My workstation budget is done for the year at home.

So I guess no one has anything else to say unless it's off topic, what a shame. Even though an above reply said they would check something when they got home from work and report back, which was within the last week, days ago, and has not happened.

currently the video is radeon 3450 hd card, but there's an hdmi slot on the pc from like built in graphics 3200 series i think.

my main pc has a 8800gt 512mb dvi only.

Im not sure which video card you are using now, I am not familiar with nVidia products, but with ATI, set your resolution to 720p in the catalyst control center and adjust the overscan if needed to fill the screen. Small text will not look 100% crisp because the image is still being scaled, but games and HD (720p) video will look great.

As for 1080p and 1080i being practically identical, while in theory this maybe true, but on a 1080i HDTV set that does not support true 1080p there is a huge difference. The TV will scale the 1080i image to the native resolution of the panel, which in most cases is 1366x768 or 1360x768.

Running 720p to your panel is the best resolution over a digital connection (DVI or HDMI) since the least amount of scaling will be done with that method. If you want to run the at the native resolution you will need to run an analog dsub (vga) connection to your tv, if it supports it and set your resolution to 1366x768 or whatever the native resolution might be.
Your question was answered in this post.

I went digging to take a look at your card, and I saw that your 3450 includes a little adapter that you plug into the port that looks like S-Video, and has output for component cables (red-green-blue). That port is designed to be connected to your television, so you could try going that route too. Connect them to you tv and adjust the settings in ATI's configuration panel to output 1080i over those cables.

I did see that, but maybe in my last post I forgot about it.
The Radeon card I have came with the loaner gateway pc Fry's loaned me while my other pc that has the 8800GT is getting looked at. So the only adapter I have is an HDMI-DVI cable that I bought a couple months ago.

I guess I'll connect to the tv hdmi port and then on the pc try to get 1366x768 or whatever is 720p. I hope it looks good, but I am thinking it won't.

I've got an xps 1330 with HDMI output from an NVida GeForce 8400 GS on it and I'm running it to a 42" Phillips HD. I was SOOooo amazed at the crystal clear output on that from my 'puter. If your not getting just a stunning picture and your going HDMI to HDMI It has to be a setting on the your TV. I have even ran this on composite and that wasn't too shabby till u compare to the HD. Hope you get it worked out soon it will definitely be worth your while! Good luck.
