Um No. you can't see how much rep someone has got. you have to go into user control panel to see. See at this point of time I have 625 Points not the amount you can see indicated beside the green bar.
Rep power is the amount of rep you would give to someone if you clicked the scales

I think the whole system is utterly confusing. I, for my part, have decided to ignore it. If one needs a special degree to understand a system, it's usefulness is questionable. Example: On my User CP, I have 8 of those green little squares but on my logo there are only 3 - go figure. But it really does not matter one way or the other - at least to me.

Don't ignore it [the system ] completely. Lots of member contributors who have given you some rep points, would no doubt welcome some of your rep points in return.:p ;)

So what you trying to say is, If you were out back to newbie. You wouldn't care. You're also Putting John down as he has probably worked a few hundred hours on making the forums a safe and enjoyable place as possible. I think badges and rep etc is a very good system. You get to know who the most respected people are and you also get a great feeling of achievement. (just like the time I got Vista Pro)

it's not rocket science here. I see 4 green pips that you have from your posts and on your profile page, not 3.

This thread here can explain some of the reputation and badge system, and also the general facts explains a lot too. I also have a thread here on it, it's a little bit different, being it's for the Windows 7 Forums, but not much.

Another forum that is 'unlocked' once you achieve Vista Pro status.

Is it the 'VIP' forum that has suddenly appeared for me or can everyone access that?

EDIT: Yes, I am still a 'Power User' so the appearance of the the 'VIP' forum has surprised me.

It was not my intent to put anybody down. I was not even aware who created the system - and if that was John and he feels put down, I apologize. All I was saying is that I do not understand the system and that I myself do not focus on it. But your points are well taken.

Airbot, thanks for taking the time to give me the explanations. I think I am getting the general idea. But I still don't understand why I have 4 green bips under my user ID, but 9 green bips in my User CP. It is also not quite clear to me how the REP points increase. From time to time, I see an increase, but I am not exactly sure what triggers it and why they sometimes jump up by 1 point and other times more than 1 point.
I participate in a couple of other Forums where I am just "member" - even after more than 9500 posts. So the system here is all new to me. But I like the WVF Forum because there are a lot of friendly people here and sometimes I can help them out. So a minor confusion does not really make a difference.

The 4 green pips that show when you post aren't the same as the ones that other users have given you a rep. See I think you are confusing these here..

whs1.JPGwhs3.JPG

With these here..

whs2.JPG

These ones here are just the pips from a user givng you rep, they're not related to the pips under your user name.

Rep points received to you the user, depends on the other users rep power that gives you a rep at some point.

An example here..

A brand new user who has really low rep power might give you a rep that's
only worth 1 point or a few, where as if I gave you 1 rep on some post with my high rep power, you're received rep would increase like 50 points.

See your rep power under your badge there says 22, where as mine says 74, so I would have a greater effect on your rep point increase if I gave you a rep then you would to me.

But over time, the more rep you receive, the higher your rep power will get.

It can seem a little confusing at first, but if you go over the links I gave you in my first post there, it should become a little clearer. :)
