Pain In The Butt
Power User
I am working away on my computer and it hasn't been restarted for awhile so I restarted. When it got past all the startup and started loading the icons it took forever and ever. I looked at the load it was putting in the computer and it is 100% most of the time to all 4 cores. It does go down periodically but I can't get it to stop. I have run a virus check, antispyware checks, disc check. I have my computer running in best performance mode and it is still choppy. Quad core, 4gb or ram. I have had this thing for a year and a half running great. What could it be? I know it could be a thousand things but does anyone have any idea of what to check. Checking the windows task manager in working set memory svchost.exe is kicking mys arse. System idle was almost non existent. Right now for the first time it is at 96 for system idle as I am typing. I will keep on checking but I don't know where to go from here. Could it be memory? Help.
There is one svchost.exe with PID 940.
Under the services it is listed as DcomLaunch - DCOM Server Process Launcher
There is another svchost.exe that is killing me at the startup for a period of time but it has just gone down and I can't find it now. When I restart it again I will check it first.

Hi ingeborgdot,

It depends how long the system has not been used for - it could be simply the system house keeping. I am running Windows 7 Beta more or less full time at the moment but decided to pop back into my Vista install and found that it was virtually unusable for about and hour - this was caused by the system and all my net aware applications checking for the updates they had been missing for about the 14 days since I last booted Vista.

Hopefully this is similar to the issue you have :)

It had been used I just had not restarted for about a week so I just restarted the machine, that's all. All the updates needed have been installed as I make sure of that.
Do you think a repair is in order?

Hi,
Sorry Mis-read your original post :o

As this is a re-start issue the thing to think about is "has anything been added or removed since the last time"

has any hardware or software changed since the last restart?

The problem here is that with the automatic updates with windows this is normally the case :(

Process explorer from sysinternals is a better tool for investigating the actual processes running than the built in task manager so you may want to download and run this to see if you can identify what is actually using the processor in the form of the generic svhost processes

Process Explorer

Once you have identified the responsible process hopefully this may be controlled to return control of the system back to you

I had an external hdd but changed to a startech dual hdd that had some software with it. It was call steelvine. It did cause my floppy/card read to run every 3 seconds so I disabled the floppy. I tried the floppy again and it still did it. When I stopped the software from running my floppy was ok again. I have since uninstalled the software but my computer is having issues even without it installed, so that was not the problem.
Would a repair be in order?

Hi,

The ideal in this situation would be a system restore to a time before the changes, but of course as this has been some time this may be not possible.

System Restore - How to - Vista Forums

if this is not practical what I would advise is that you perform a system file check

System Files - SFC Command - Vista Forums

You could if this is still not working try a repair install which would probably cure the issues but could mean more work to recover the system to the same state that it was before the problem

Repair Install For Vista

Could it be a hardware issue? I have tested memory and it is great. Video card? In problem report something was listed for video card but that was for an nvidia card which I had in there a long time ago. I made sure all drivers for it are gone. I don't know for sure as I am pulling straws for the right one.

It could be a hardware issue but because of when it happened - after a re-boot - I would suspect it's more software related, one thing to try is to see if it happens in "Safe" mode, ( press F8 while booting to get the options menu), if the issue is not present in safe mode then that would suggest a change in driver or service since the last re-boot, the SFC /scannow should highlight any corruption but as for the cause the svchost process you mentioned actually services about 20+ other services so the repair-install could be the most time efficcient answer

The thing with any recovery operation is that it reset's the system into a state it was at a particular moment in time. Doing this may correct an error but as it is non selective it may well undo other changes that are working correctly. with the repair install option you should carefully read the notes and warnings in Shawn's tutorial as certain things may need to be re-installed which can increase the time taken to complete the action

If you post the log file from the VistaForums SysInfo Tool, someone might be able to help you better. It will take about 5-6 minutes to collect all data. Post your results here and someone more knowledgeable than myself will answer.

Hope this helps,
