Help with new home network please

Hello again..
I have managed to install my wireless broadband router. Well, at least partially. I would like to ask for help now because I think I've gotten myself into a real mess.
I have spoken to tech support for Netgear, and the gentleman there was not really much help.

This is the situation. I have a Netgear wireless modem router attached to my phone line and the Ethernet port on my computer. My network adapter is Intel (R)82566CD 2 Gigabit Network Connection.
I plugged the router in, connected it to the phone line, attached it to the Ethernet port and turned it on.
I answered all the questions and changed my admin name, SSID and provided a password. I pu the installation CD in the drive on my desktop and answered all the questions.
I put in my ISP settings and I was on the internet.
I found it a bit funny that no drivers got installed and Vista didn't quack about new hardware.

I then installed a network adapter on my laptop. It installed fine and detected the wireless modem and i am on the internet with that as well.

Now, my problem.
From the Network and Sharing Center, I can't see the wireless network. I can see the network (and mylaptop) from a program called Intel Viiv Media Server, but am unable to do anything but see it.
I tried to 'set up a wireless connection' from the Network and Sharing Center but it wants a username and password which, in spite of the fact that i wrote everything down really carefully, don't work.

Not that I will be able to help but maybe if you clarify your post, someone else might.

From your BACKGROUND INFO, it appears that you have two computers.
Computer-1 is hard wired to your router/modem.
Computer-2 is wireless.
Both work fine with the internet.

From your PROBLEM INFO,

--- It appeared from your background info that your laptop computer-2 was “on the internet with that as well”. Confusing to me at least.

It would be helpful to clarify
how many computers,
what operating system is each one running,
which ones are wired and which ones are wireless,
which ones work with the internet and which ones don’t.

Computer #1 Desktop with Windows Vista with Intel ®82566CD 2 Gigabit Network Connection attached via Ethernet cable to my Netgear DGN2000 wirelesss N modem router.
Norton Internet Security Firewall

Computer #2 Laptop Windows ME with a Netgear 54mbps G USB 2.0 network adapter.
Norton Antivirus and AdAware (no firewall)

I can connect to the internet with both computers-#1 via the modem router/LAN connection and #2 wireless via the router. No problem.

Both computers have file and print sharing on. Password sharing is off.

I can ping the router and computer #2 from computer #1, and I can ping the router and computer #2 from computer #2, but computer #1 can't ping itself or receive pings from computer #2.
All sites can ping each other with the computer disconnected from the internet and the firewall down.

What I can't do, is share files and printers. Computer #1 doesn't pick up a wireless network, and as far as computer #2 goes, computer #1 doesn't exist.

Again, not that I can help but from your description it sure sounds like the problem is being caused by the Norton Internet Security Firewall. If that is disabled, then comp-2 can ping comp-1 right? Does file or printer sharing work if it’s disabled?
