weird sound like static - did it sound more like digital feedback? If so, check your sound card and the sound card drivers....

I dont have a separate Sound card i only have the drivers for the integrated intel DX48BT2 board (IDT audio something)

I would also take into consideration that just because you replaced the board doesn't mean that it fixed. I have installed a few boards in a row for a custie at one of my jobs a ways back. It can happen, I guess the only real way to check would be to reload Windows on a separate disk and see how that acts. Otherwise if you dont have a job, use a tool like Ghost, Acronis or Power Quest Drive Image to make an image and reload on the same drive.

Make an image of your computer right now so that you can reload Windows on the hard drive and have a backup copy of what you have installed now. If you are not sure what imaging is, here is a little info:

Complete hard disk drive copy, cloning and image backup software: computer files and disk copying

Thats Acronis's tool, not something you need to buy just an idea. I have a bootable CD i use that has all the imaging tools on one disc. Otherwise finding a disc like Hirens Ultimate Boot CD also will work with all the tools provided there.

so basically you mean re-install windows and all software apps and see if problem persists... i.e. determine if there is a bad install for windows or software- correct?

My Computer

Yes, if you are going to do that make sure you make a copy of your files or make the image so that you can revert back to your original setup if it doesn't make a difference.

any other ideas on why this could be happening/

My Computer

I ave a little more info that could shed some more lght on this problem
Toyda i decided to install 2 games that came with my board and my graphics card (company of heroes and Ghost recon 2) installed fine. just a few moments back i decided to check out company of heroes, as soon as i clicked on it i lost the signal on my screen (sound was working and system was running but no signal on my screen)... si i reset the system. after restart decided to try ghost recon 2. started it the same thing ahppened... only this time i thought maybe its doing this because the Game CD is not in the drive, so i loaded the CD into the drive and i got the unexpected reboot to happen....
Does that help any of you guys figure out the problem/
