HELP ME | --> Vista Issue

Whenever I am playing some kind of music in the background, and I go to scroll up and down a page, the music gets muffled or degraded and slows down.

This only happens when i Scroll on a page. Moving Graphics tend to slow down too when I scroll.

Anyone have some ideas on what the problem is and How to fix it??

2 gig is better, also you don't say what graphics card you have

Even Basic needs the extra boost, you're running on minimum spec.

Hi Eragon,

It would be useful to have details of your WEI (Windows Experience Index) as this might help us narrow down where your problem lies. However, from the information that you have currently provided, there are a couple of things which I have noticed. Firstly, the amount of memory you have installed. Since your figure is 509.43MB, I am asuming that you have 512MB installed. This is not enough for Vista, even the Basic version. As it says in your note, I would consider increasing this to a minimum of 1GB. Secondly, you have not provided any details about your graphics, but I am assuming that you are using the in-built graphics capability of your motherboard. This has to use your main system memory for its data manipulation and also a fair amount of processing time from the CPU. Since graphics are data intensive, they require a good deal of processing power, and when more graphics data needs manipulating than usual, i.e. when scrolling, then other processes managed by the CPU get less time. To lessen the effect of this, change your graphics settings. Reduce the refresh rate to 60Hz (if you have a TFT or LCD display, then this should be sufficient). Reduce your colour depth to 16-bit. This will reduce the load on your RAM (more so if you increase the amount of RAM to 1GB), reduce the page file useage and thus give your system a speed boost (not much of one admittedly, but it might make a difference). Ideally, if you can, install a graphics card. Even a card of a couple of generations back can out-perform built-in graphics. Make sure you get one with at least 256MB of memory.

Very true, however I am not using the Built in Video Card, I got a new one. Here are the specs for the card:

Name: RADEON X700 Series
Adapter RAM: 256Mb (268,435,456 bytes)
Resolution: 1024 x 768 x 60 Hertz

I Think it is already set to 60Hhz. ( This is the highest my monitor will support anyway, I have a hp pavilion v50 [kinda old] )

I have found out that by reducing the color to 16 bit does make the problem happen a lot less, But it still happens to me.

My "WEI" is 2.9 However, it is only that low because my RAM is rated 2.9. Everything else is rated 4.1+

On a side note, I did a System Restore ( reboots everything to Factory default using a boot disk) before this all happened to me. But after I did the restore, it seemed to make things worse.... Just wanted to let you know this. Maybe something happened during the restore.

And ANOTHER note lol... Ive switched to Firefox browser and the problem is even less! It really does sound like a RAM problem to me. But why didn't this happen to me before the system restore?

Hi Eragon,

I would still consider increasing your system RAM to a minimum of 1GB. I think that you misunderstood me when I said "reduce the page file useage". What I meant by this is if you increased the main system RAM, your system wouldn't have to rely on the Page File (PF) as much. You certainly shouldn't decrease it. If you haven't changed the PF settings, they should be 'System Managed'. Leave them as they are, and let Vista dynamically control the PF. Check to see if you have the latest driver for your card - link given below.

mate as already said you do need to upgrade that ram on that system 512mb is a the very basic for xp never mind vista

also check that your if your motherboard supports dual channel memory


if so buy 2 sticks of 1 gb of the same memory and install it as dual channel
you score will be much improved

LOL one would think you looked at the price of RAM. Try Newegg.com and see if that helps ease the hurt any. Also try some second hand computer parts stores. I see you are from Maine. If you are close to Portland you should be able to find some second hand RAM fairly cheap.

Your memory timing is causing the sound spikes I have had this issue before, you either need to set the right timing for the memory you have or get IDENTICAL memory sticks becaure different types can also cause this problem.

CPUZ can give you the correct timings you will need so make sure they are set correctly also try a slower speed setting for your memory or buy two identical 1GB sticks (less that $50 for two these days)

Thanks for the info! I too know of Newegg.com since this is where I bought the computer lol. But I can try looking there. I'm not too worried about the price if its $30 or lower, some cost as little as $17.00

You have to go to the BIOS. On my computer, it is a simple operation. I lack the knowledge to tell you how to get there on yours, but folks here can tell you how. You will have to take your memory timings off of automatic settings and set them manually. Use the CAS setting for your memory. If you don't know what those are, ask and I promise you someone here will tell you. Just state what brand of RAM and what model it is. It is really easy when you know what to do. LOL I'm a clueless newbie and folks here have walked me through all kinds of stuff. Good luck.

EDIT: for an example of the CAS settings, look at the specs in my sig. Under RAM you will see 9-9-9-24. Those are my CAS settings. Until I set them manually (even though on automatic they registered the same values) all hell was breaking loose. Again I lack the knowledge to know WHY this happens, it just does.

Ok so what values do i set them too?

Here is what i got for my RAM:

Latency: 4.0
Delay: 4
Precharge: 4
Cycle Time: 12

So this would be 4-4-4-12 Right?

Well I changed the Latency to 5

Nothing changed....

I haven't used CPU-Z so i can't comment on it. I also don't understand why it gives you 2 different values for the latency at 266MHz. Have you checked to see if the voltage is correct?

To answer your other question, my values when I had it set on automatic were the 9-9-9-24 that they needed to be. Again, why it made a difference when i changed it from auto to manual and input'ed the exact same values, I just lack the knowledge to say. Also there were two other setting I had to change. I had to go to "unlinked" and change my clock cycles from 1T to 2T, but the last (clock cycles) was due to the fact that I have 4 sticks of RAM so it shouldn't be an issue with you.

LOL I am in past my depth. I wish someone like Dwarf would see this, or that dmex comes back.
