Hello all I am new here and.....

after an update that was just installed I am completely puzzled. I am trying to understand what this program "werfault.exe" is that is just now starting to highjack my cpu and seems to be running when I go into my task manager?

Recently I have noticed that I can hear my CPU running more often and couldn't figure out why. Is the werfault.exe the problem and how do I fix it? I have been reading up on it, but I am not a techie (so to speak) and do not want to harm my computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated in this matter.

Hi,

It is part of the Windows error reporting Service.

Try stopping it and setting it to manual in services.msc.

Then try running a system file check - use this and click Start System Repair

For a simple solution you may try system restore and try installing the update again or check the file version from this article and update if required.

if it is something to do with the service then you may have to run repair installation.

Need more information

upgraded from xp to vista?
what about SP1?
What was the update no?

I went in and set it to "Manual"... thank you, but I am not sure about the "System File Check Tool" I have Windows Live Care and I am getting a warning. I have always been careful about what I download on my pc. Is it safe to ok it to run?

Hi,

yes it is safe to run it - was written by Stephen -one of the mods. here and trusted by M$. Have used it myself. It will try and fix system files and list the ones it can't.

May be able to post you a replacement file if needed - depends what is required.

Repair install would be the next step as Prasath says.

+1 for Prasathkumar's advice of using system restore to roll back prior to installing the update and trying it again.

(Start orb>type "restore" in the search field, select "System Restore" and select a restore point)



The problem isn't so much werfault.exe as what is triggering it. Setting the service to manual just stops it from automatically starting with Windows. It's still being triggered as required.

Another less desirable quick fix would be set the Windows error reporting to disable , which would stop the werfault usage but stop error reporting as well.

The point of stopping and setting to manual was to allow SFC to run unhindered - and see what it came up with.

Reinstalling the update after system restore may do the trick, or the problem may just recur.

Otherwise a Repair install is pretty quick and painless.

Just disable it. Pretty obvious the original poster is not using it anyhow.
