GTA IV - Ingame crash problem

Hi all, this is my first post on this forum :D

I just bought a new (very nice) computer so that I could play all of the newest games. But behold... I ran into problems on the very first day :(.

When I play GTA IV the game crashes at random times giving me the following error:

crash.jpg

(Im sorry that it is in Danish... If anyone needs it I will translate)

I have searched the net for info on this error but I can´t seem to find any. I have also tryed to completely remove my Nvidia driver and installed the latest one (182.06) and I did the same with my chipset drivers. The game is of course also updated to the latest version (v1.0.2.0).

This is really frustrating, so I hope som of you guys have a solution. Below is my system specs:

OS: Vista Ultimate x64
CPU: Core i7 965 (3.20GHz)
RAM: 12Gb
Graphic: GForce GTX 295
Motherboard: GIGABYTE EX58-UD4P

Just some final notes:
My computer is not getting to hot.
Vista is updated.
I have disabled paging on all harddisks.

I have also tryed repairing the system files (SFC /scannow) to no avail.

Is it just GTA IV? If it is trying turning down the view distance in the settings. What resolution do you play the game at? For 1920x1200 try view distance at about 15-20. Drop it down if you are playing at a higher resolution. Equally turn it up a bit if you are playing with a lower resolution.

Although the GTX 295 is an immense card, it apparently causes some problems on GTA IV. GTA IV doesn't officially support SLI which may explain some of the problems with the GTX 295.

Hope this helps

I noticed that GTA IV since the last patch, the 1.0.2.0 version, began to crash on my system without any given reason  It's not the problem of OC, 'cause it crashes also on stock settings... It happens randomly, not in certain places. You drive a car somewhere, go to a mission, anything... and when you're most concentrated on doing something in the game... boom... you can admire your windows wallpaper without any error box  It's giving me a headache lately... Before the latest patch everything were completely stable, no crashes at all...

Hey thanks for your replys...

eggyuk:
Yes it is only in GTA IV this problem occurs, I do however have crashes when I try to play older games aswell, but I suspect that this is a different issue. I play the game at 1280 x 1024 85Hz with a viewing distance of 32. I already tryed turning the resolution down and the viewing distance aswell, but it did´ent help.

I did read somewhere on the net that GTA IV dos' ent support SLI, so I changed my Nvidia settings so that the display is run of one GPU and PhysX on the other. This also did not help .

Majkel:
What you are describing is almost the same error that I have, I do however get a error message (see my first entry in this thread). My system is also not OC´ed.

I updated to the latest version (v1.0.2.0) before I played the game for the first time. So I´ll try reinstalling the game and updating it to v1.0.1.0...

I will let you guys know if it helped or not.

Running the game at version 1.0.1.0 did´ent help jack...

In addition to disabling SLI in Nvidia control panel I have now also tweaked som of the 3D settings for GTA IV towards performance (don´t really know why I did that, the card I´m using should easily be able to run the game).

The game is still crashing at random times, but now it seems to be less frequent then before??? Very strange I think. And another thing... I now also get the "out of memory" error some times...

Well it sucks, but I guess I´ll just have to live with it, at least until a new patch is releast .

i think that might be the problem, the out of memory errors you are getting, the system maybe backing out before you get the error thusly crashing your game, have you got enough memory allocated in the pagefile? even though you have 12GB RAM, you also need a certain amount allocated for smooth running of the OS.
to get to the pagefile, simply right click the computer icon and go to properties, on the left there will be an option saying advanced system settings, click that and continue the UAC prompt, go to performance settings and click on advanced in tabs, this is your pagefile allocation, click on change and you wil get this window below, i have allocated 500MB and this does my system fine, anything less than that and yours may have random lockups.

Hey MrNeeds thanks for your reply...

Back when I was running XP I did so without a pagefile since it made windows run smoother, but as I´m new to Vista I reallocated 1 - 3 Gb pagefile on C:.

I still get the "Out of video memory" error sometimes and at other times I get the other error (see first entry in this thread).

Guess there is no easy fix for this problem...

well i decided to test it, i got an out of memory error and the game crashed while playing online, only when i increased the pagefile, so it maybe you need to reduce the pagefile.
i have never had the out of memory error with 500MB

Hmm thats weird...

Well I have know reduced the pagefile to 500 - 1000 Mb and windows says somthing about needing atleast 800 Mb to log errors or somthing like that. But it still crashes with the following error:

ahh, i think you have DEP enabled for all programs, you dont need it for everything.
in virtually the same place as the pagefile, go one tab to the right, and enable it for essential windows services.

Unfortunately when tried to disable DEP for GTA IV the system returned the message that GTA has to run with DEP enabled and that it is not possible to disable it for this program :(

Hey...

I think I might have it now:

1. Set the "Texture quality" to medium.

2. Set "Clip capture" to off.

3. And append this to your shortcut: -noprecache -novblank
E.g. "D:\Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\GTAIV.exe" -noprecache -novblank

This seems to work on my system, even with Multi-GPU enabled.

Oh, and I have completly disabled DEP for all programs with the following command:

"bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff" (This command has to be run as administrator).

Be careful with this command as I beleave it can f**k up your system :D.

Well, there is no option to turn off DEP completely. There's only 2 of them - one to have it always on for everything on the system, and the other one is pretty much like the first with exclusions to some programs/applications you point to. So, I tried that second option, pointed to disable DEP for GTA IV and I received that message that I posted about before. So like I said, it seems that GTA IV cannot run without DEP enabled for it.

But maybe I did something wrong... :sarc:

EDIT:

Ok, so it's a language misunderstood :p Different translation is used in my language for the option you mentioned. We both have it set ONLY for essential windows programs and services.

but i just need to ask you, on the pagefile, have you set it to prioritise background services or programs? i have mine set to background services

My setting is to prioritise running programs.

my gta iv is not starting up. after i click play in social club crap it starts to bring me the normal black screen. after the mousepointer fades away there should be the first text coming up but nothing happens.

i reinstalled my vista now for 3 times after each reinstall it runs perfectly but after some time - not after installing some certain driver or or program - just randomly - gta isnt starting... but the crazy thing is not any game is starting either... just a black screen then nothing. no error message. no "gta iv isnt working any longer" or something like that vista window. even the error log is empty - only one time there was an error concerning gta iv it was application error with error ID 1000 nothing more

i have DEP turned on for windows programs and services only
i have the **** with every game but counter strike

anyone help? would be great

If after some time none of your game want to start up, than there's something wrong with your system, not GTA IV itself...

Are you using latest drivers ? As I can see you're playing on the laptop... maybe it overheats and prevents from running any games... But that probably would be occuring in other way, by the system to turn off completely...

but i first discovered it with gta iv thats why i posted here... and before I had gta iv everything was fine

processor temperature is down to 54° C drivers are all up to date

the thing is when i only had stock drivers which were preinstalled it also didnt start after a time then i reinstalled everything set up new drivers and after a time it also didnt work
now i only have the drivers installed which came with the laptop but the problem also occured with newest drivers (graphics card, chipset.... you know all that stuff you can have drivers for)

If the problem occurs again while you're running on the drivers and software which came with your laptop, than I'm afraid that you may have a hardware issue that is causing this weird system behaviour...

Let us know what you experience with the stock drivers.

with the stock drivers its all the same
i start a game... it starts loading... then i get a black screen as usual (most games start with a black screen the fading in some logos or crap) sometimes there is still the windows task bar down there sometimes not...

i ran a memtest with no errors... but still the crazy thing is that for some time after a reinstall of windows it works quite fine thats what i dont understand - its not because of anything i install... after my second reinstall i left windows with sp1 and with stock drivers only installed gta it worked and i left it for the night it was already late so i turned off my lap - next day when i got home turned it on tried to start the game and there it was again: black screen and windows task bar... it doesnt freeze completely when i start task manager and kill the process its back to os
