GF8800GT XXX vs GF9600GT XXX

Why not just build a brand new computer, instead of piecemealing things together? At least, that's my philosophy: save your moneys until you can afford what you want, and then build up a new rig.

Yes that's the eventual plan, I'm not going to install the parts permanently into my pc, but the parents will never let me buy a whole new one, because I just did (even though that was a complete ripoff... $1400 for the setup I have now... Oh well I know better now). If I spread the purchase of the parts and so spend less money at a time, I won't have so much probs with them... Geddit?:D

I was AMD only for years. I switched to Intel Xeons. I was ATI then Nvidia because of drivers. I am ready to switch back to ATI for the 4870x2 in the fall.

I dunno about the 4870x2. In theory, you get two fairly powerful GPU's that should work together and make for a seriously powerful video card.... but ATI has tried this at least twice before (that I'm aware of), and it just never seems to work well in reality.

Better to just buy a really nice nVidia card.

Just my $0.02.

As far as AMD goes... AMD was often a better solution in the days of the Pentium4, but I was quite pleased when Intel came out with the CoreDuo and got back to kicking the crap out of AMD. :)

From all the reviews the 4870 is 25% than Nvidia 280.
