That DvT-6000 apparently has 9.25 hours of battery life time, perhaps its a new era for battery life?

Do NOT at all costs get an eMachines/Acer/Gateway. Avoid them at all costs. Take it from someone who has had at least 3 notebooks and desktops from all 3 companies. Toshiba/HP is what I would buy on a PC, but I mostly recommend Apple Mac's if you have a big budget. Here is a good laptop in your budget though. With most computers except netbooks being 3.0 GB + In RAM, it's the only way to go. If you have more than 4GB RAM, you need x64.

I know, I was thinking about editing nearly that exact phrase into my comment, but was too lazy.

I don't see many other laptops out there besides HP atm. Everyone loves cheap computers

Not much else you have to add.

32bit is out the door. Most systems today have more than 4GB of RAM and then you need 64bit. Besides, the 64bit Windows7 is more stable because of the certified drivers.

Where can you get a laptop with blu-ray drive for under $600?

But lenovo is an excellent company.

You are right about under 600 $ No Blue Ray. Though excluding it the model from Lenovo is good deal. If he/she can wait until November ending then it would be nice as till then prices may drop due to upcoming new models. I wish good luck for that in that price :) Keep fingers crossed.

Thanks for the rep :)

Yes, a friend of mine has an IBM thinkpad, and despite it being 10 years older than my laptop theres still something appealing about it. They're also very durable, and resistant to cat scratches and pizza sauce.

Sometimes there is an unreasonable mark-up by a computer company just to include a blu-ray drive in the computer. It is worthwhile to check on what the model is, because sometimes existing blu-ray drives are compatible. You can buy it separately and replace the default DVD drive with it, saving yourself some cash.

Lenovo is very dependable, though tends to be priced a little more than the competition. HP has its ups and downs. The latest models seem to be very good. I find Sony laptops to have a cheaper build quality to them. Toshiba used to be terrible or mediocre, but lately they've gotten much better. ASUS is quite respectable.

One key suggestion: Try to see some laptops first hand before you buy anything on-line. There is something about the tactile feel of using it that gives you an impression you wouldn't otherwise get from photos and specifications.
