Solved general advice on using readyboost

I don't use ReadyBoost. Just tried it for a few seconds to see if the key drive would work. But I'm curious. Supposedly these key drives only have so many writes until they die. Has anyone "ReadyBoosted" their USB Key to death yet?

they eventually do i believe, but it takes a very long time, about 8 to 10 years i read somewhere.....

To be honest, with RAM as cheap as it is, I just don't see the point of using ReadyBoost since you do not gain much or any noticable difference in performance (other than a bit less hard drive activity) when you have 3GB or more of RAM installed.

Yea your right brink, i really do not need readyboost, but i usually pick a topic to learn about if i am stuck on something to do on the computer...

But i usually hate it when you get a little problem and you carn't get to the bottom of it ,there's quite a few reasons but no answer's really about why the readyboost cache file go's missing..

one of them i think was your computer does not need to use readyboost as it has enough system ram in it, was one answer i seen on another forum, i could go on and on .......

Anyway brink, readyboost is working fine again now, after setting it up again, only this time i got another dialog box, with a check box which i never got on the other occasions.
Which said "do not reinstate or restart this device on startup" or something like that, carn't quite remember.....

The computer boots up in about 15 seconds where it usually took about 50 seconds, so there is a big improvement there.

I either carry on using it or i wont bother, it can be a bit of a pain with this being a laptop, and having the usb sticking out all the time......:D

I would leave that option unticked. Have fun with it to see if it may help improve anything though. :)

Right you are then brink.....
Just one more little question, i am not very good on ratio's.
Could you tell me what the ratio means.

My Computer

I'm not sure, but I would guess that it's the ratio between how much is cached and how much is compressed. The compression ratio.

If you are going to have the USB key dedicated for ReadyBoost, then yes it would be best to just leave it plugged. You might plug it in one of the USB ports on the back of the computer case so it would help to not be removed by mistake. It will not cause any problems to leave it connected.

I would not worry about readyboosting a stick to death. I run a stick with picture files as input to my sdebar slideshow - since 2 years about 8 hours per day. There is no problem at all. Of course these are all reads. Maybe with a lot of write activity that would be different.
But as Brink says, with the prices for RAM these days, why bother with Ready Boost.

i think i've got enough information for now, i'll just see how it go's

You're most welcome Carl. :)
