Garbled screen then pooop

Hi Everyone,

Something very odd happened today. I was as usual loading a large file ( 5.4gb ) in to Photoshop and as PS was doing it's business I noticed everything jumped over to my second monitor and the main monitor went blank. Moments later the image on the second monitor turned into a garbled fragmented mess before going into power save mode from which I couldn't get out of. Very strange.....Forced a warm boot.

As the system had just been turned on so I can sort of rule out a heat issue - possibly & ram test OK.

My workstation is mainly off line but two days ago I had to ftp something and I do remember vista installing an automatic update for windows update ( without my permission ) which I was very annoyed about, shame on you MS.....and after rebooting I saw a few reg. modifications come up on screen. Could this be the cause of this odd behavior.

It's been fine since I had the warm boot - any ideas as to what's going on.

Yep, it's enabled for the c: drive only.

Your OS is on C: right ... have a look ar SR to see the MS update!

Will you lose very much if you restore to before the update?

Just had a look and the update is there.

Yes, the C drive is system and some main programs only - all my other files are on separate drives so I won't lose any work.

Is there a known issue with the Sly Stealthy Automatic 'Window update' update? I did think there could be trouble ahead if my regies were being updated by something I didn't control.

I will give the restore a try if I encounter any more problems as it seems OK for now.

You have WU set to let you 'decice' and it still updated you ... :huh:

Just remember: the older SR points get the less reliable they become!

Yeah, I know - I had it set to 'check for updates but let me decide when to download or install them'........So when it updated itself I was very annoyed.

I just wonder when the last time you checked that WU is still set to notify you and not install.

I've had it "mysteriously" get changed when I wasn't looking.

Nah, It's still setup as it was before. I reckon MS will bypass the WU to install the update for itself.....Some notification would have been good though....

The update may not have caused the problem - However, I had never seen such weird activity while loading a file before.

And strangest thing of all is that I don't need to upgrade anything so it wasn't the usual 'lets subconsciously do something that will mess up the system to justify an upgrade' scenario....:D
