Hi i've struggled with this ive right clicked the file to see what type of file it is but all it says is that its a File folder. For instance on my desktop i named a file 'movies' another called 'music' but ive searched to find out what type of file it is without any luck.

Open Control Panel, Folder Options.
Click on the View tab.
Select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
Click Apply then OK.

I'm confused by your use of the terms "file" and "folder" interchangeably. they are two different things.
Are you double clicking or single clicking on a file name or folder name to open it? Unless you've set the button actions for your mouse to open a file or folder with a single click, you will need to double click.
