Far Cry 2 and vista 64bit

@Sharkbite:

I guess your card is an ASUS, since I had the exact same issue as you, only with an ASUS EAH4870 and Farcry 2 running on Vista x64. I fixed this, as well as a similar crash with Fallout 3, with the following workaround:

1. Uninstall ASUS GamerOSD utility.
2. Completely uninstall all ASUS-ATi drivers.
3. Reboot PC and install latest ASUS-ATi drivers, this time leaving out GamerOSD.
4. No need to reinstall the game, just run again.

Hope this helps,
Rob

My Computer

Yes It is ASUS EAH4870x2

I hope uninstalling GamerOSD does not remove the smartdoc thing..I kinda like that to check temps and set fan speeds relating to temp... (now that summer is ending my idle temps are getting below 50 deg cel...and room is not like an oven) :)

I have fallout 3 but have not installed it yet (I am playng through the old versions as I never played them...playing fallout 2 at moment).

I will try your workaround... I finished FC2 but still didnt find all diamond cases.. may go back later to look for them...and just cause mayhem.... use flamethrower on guardposts and general mahem/slaughterfest :p

I wonder if this will make assassins creed run in full screen properly as well... I currently play it in DX 9 as when i try with DX 10 I get a stupid window (and when playing if mouse goes offscreen it pauses). And i know about the full screen shortcut (ctr + enter... or something + enter) but when i do that i get a frozen screen (with sound still going in background).. only way i can unfreeze without reboot is to ctr+alt+del and close the top running process.. (closing the assassins creed application does not work).

Thanks for the reply..I thought this post thread had died :o

ASUS SmartDoctor is a separate utility. In any case, I suggest you remove it too, test my 'workaround', and then reinstall it (SmartDoctor) only after testing to confirm that the games run ok.

Yaaa worked a treat. (finally got to run the benchmark tool for FC2).

Also fixed assassins creed...now can run DX10 in full screen (although why you cant set this up to happen automatically is beyond me).

Well I uninstalled smart doc and gamerOSD and installed latest driver (although I think it is same version that I had...and i didnt uninstall first or use a driver cleaner. This makes me think that is is just the gamerOSD or smartdoc that is the problem).

Later I may try reinstalling smartdoc and test the games again. (when i uninstalled gamerOSD but left smartdoc, every time i booted puter I got a popup telling me that smartdoc would not have all its functions if I didnt install OSD....wonder if smartdoc can operate without OSD..:sarc:).

Hi guys. I'm really sorry to pull out an old topic and doubley sorry for hyjacking. I'm just hoping someone could help me with FC2. I have the same problem as the OP did but unfortunatly the fixes suggested in this topic didn't work for me.

My problem is kind of the same although it has a twist. I've installed the game and I double click on the farcry2.exe to run it. I then get the spash screen pop up and it stays there for ages. When I click on the splash screen windows tells me the program is not responding and forces me to close it. I start the process over again.

Ive tried everything from changing compatability mode to turning off tabletpc in services. I've even tried previous versions on drivers ect ect. I'm stuck.

Did the game auto patch itself? or does this happen before the auto update?
If so it may be a firewall issue.

I never got a program not responding message.. It just disappeared. It was not showing as a running application.

I assume you are talking about same graphic card series (4870) ...(4870x2 in my case).

Not sure what u mean. But the fix that I used was specific to Asus driver for 4000 series card. Mainly the problem with the utilities (smartdoc and gamerOSD).

My main concern was that Staith's problem seems to be different from the problem I encountered. So the workaround may not help in his case and there could be another issue.

Hi Sharkbite. Thanks very much for letting me use your topic.

The game did autopatch yes, and all that downloaded and installed fine. I thought at first it might be the case that the patch was currupt in some way so I even tried starting the game without updating. The same thing happens.

My card is indeed an ATI 4870x2 and is up to date with the latest catalyst 9.2 drivers and CCC.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the game a good 5 times last night (up untill 4am trying to fix it) but each time it did the same thing. The splash screen will appear, I'll wait for about 30 seconds, click over the splash screen and thats when windows tells me the program is not responding.

I'll try and provide a screen shot of what it's doing.

Hi Sharkbite. Thanks very much for letting me use your topic.

My card is indeed an ATI 4870x2 and is up to date with the latest catalyst 9.2 drivers and CCC.

I am still using catalyst version 8.12 and drivers 8.561 so I dont know if newer drivers have same issue.

Before i uninstalled gamerOSD and smartdoc .. I used to get the game working by setting the options to run game in win xp mode with the screen resolution set at 640 x 480 (and the uther stuff turned off like visual themes , desktop composition.. Even though vista went to large font (I have 24" monitor) when game did start it was in resolution set ingame.

When i used the 640x480 resolution I did not get the spalsh screen... and i just randomly clicked onscreen.. sometimes it would take 5 or 6 tries but it eventually jumped into the farcry loading screen. Nobody can explain why this happened..but as it stopped once gamerOSD and smartdoc were uninstalled I assume that these apps were the problem.

Another problem I had with an MMORP (Auteria) before unstalled the apps..was that it would not load..I was getting an Auteria.exe cannot run message whenever i tried (I could still get into game via linux but was very choppy and laggy). After I removed the two apps I happened to click the Auteria game icon again..and presto..it opened straight up and started loading all the updates..I have since been able to access this MMORP without any problems from vista.

All I can suggest is to make sure that smartdoc and gamerOSD are completely removed from your system...and maybe try installing an older driver version.

I've read that the newest games are beign multi-threaded and most of the cpu's do not support this feature expect the Intel EE. I've played Stalker-Clear Sky and it uses multi-threading, the lastest DX10.1 and like MrNeeds applied most of these games have terrbile codings thus creathing stattering & lagging problems. Stalker is one big question because the game has exclusive first DX10.1 content, so was the game released to soon?
The Witcher EE was sort of lagging on my computer but I turned off the mult-threading in the BIOS and accordingly for that particular level of the game everything worked supreme however in the next level neither the enabled/disabled feature of the multi-threading worked from the CPU. The CPU instructions aren't mistaking but the coding of the game is. Go figure.
What type of DX10 is Farcry2 using?

Phuerismo welcome to the forums.

Unless you added a video card to that Gateway of yours listed in your system specs, you don't have a chance in you-know-what of ever playing Far Cry 2 (or just about any other game for that matter). For the curious the full specs for his computer,

If you didn't add a video card and you want to play this game or any other, then you're going to have to add one.

To eliminate stuttering and lagging in FC2, go to the console and type gfx_maxfps 30 (or up to your average minimum framerate). This has to be done every time, but it removes the stuttering in DX10.

Ebay is your friend :D

I get most of my new releases off ebay usually for better than half the retail price. Only thing that u need to be aware of is that some people register the game to play online and this can only be done once per copy. But i dont play many of them online (and many who buy them and then sell them after the finish it dont either).

I recently bought a copy of Fallout 3 from ebay..disc is like new.. Added bonus is that I got the UK version which is not censored like the aussie version (even though the difference is hardly noticable anyway).

I usually avoid the bulk sellers (beware some say UK version..but they mean it is in english not korean etc... if you look at box image the UK/US versions have 18+ on them..aussie ones have MA 15+). I usually go for private sellers who have item in as auction...work out the most u want to pay (include postage) and bid max close to end. If you dont win it dont worry..they pop up all the time..

I have not had a bad experience yet by purchasing online (touch wood).

I had the same problem when using DX10, bought the game on Saturday (2 days ago). Stopping the tablet service worked for me. I try to keep it disabled anyway because I use a multi monitor setup. Disabling the Tablet service stops the tablet spanning both screens which in turn halves the active resolution of the tablet.

For those who come searching this thread, here is a possible solution.

I have Far Cry 2 installed on a Vista 64 bit OS (also on XP32 in a dual boot system). Initially, I had the same problem - splash screen displays but just diappears and nothing happens.

I also have an ATI Radeon display card (5870) with 2 DVI connections.

When Far Cry 2 gets going, it only outputs to *one* of the DVI connectors on the ATI display card. Under Win XP, it will do the right thing and output to the one you have designated as your primary - or only - monitor, BUT NOT IN VISTA 64. It "prefers" one of the two outputs regardless of your designation.

Change the DVI connector for your preferred primary - or only- monitor and you might find your problem solved. It worked for me, anyway.
