Fallout 3

For me when i press New game it loads then I get a Black Screen and the game freezes. I got the patch.
Im running it on a Vista Home Premium
Nvidia Geforce 9800GT
Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz 1.16GHz
2GB Random Acess Memory
I can run Farcry 2 on ultra high and Cod WaW at highest Fine without any problems.
Edit; I think its a problem with the Engine its running, Or something Bethesda uses in both Oblivion and Fallout 3

I got it last week and installed fine except for the crypt32.dll error I now get at times since I installed Office 2007 Ent. Game ran fine with everything on max but did lock up at times after a while. Also took to moving sideways by itself at times. Patched and was a bit better but still locking up at times. Usually comes up with an error when quiting the program. Turned off DEP which reduced crashes.
Run with both UAC and DEP turned off. Mean game.

Who makes your video card?

There are compatibility issues with this game and ASUS video cards, but only when you've installed any ASUS drivers - and even if you've uninstalled their software. There can still be driver files in the system folder (most start with ATK). The hitch is if you manually delete the files, the video card no longer works, even though you "uninstalled" them with the installer! (ASUS software is fantastic but their software sucks all kinds of nuts)

I ran into this problem myself. The ASUS drivers interfere with the video codec the game uses, and the beginning of the game has a fairly long video, so the game never finishes loading.

Unfortunately Bethesda tech support is little more than cut and paste tips, I don't think they're really any good at diagnosing any problems, and seem unaware of any issues with Asus software despite there literally being thousands of people posting about issues with the game. I wonder if people have other video card drivers installed from other vendors, and if that doesn't create similar issues.

What fixed it for me was uninstalling all video card drivers, then going into the device manager and actually uninstalling the video card, with the option of deleting driver software. This should drop the resolution of the screen to 640x480 or something. Restart the machine, then reinstall the nVidia or ATi drivers, restart again and all is good.

I can't say I can blame Bethesda for the problem, as the game runs great with the standard ATi drivers. It's the Asus drivers that cause the conflict. But I can blame them for having less than stellar tech support.

I played for 6 hours straight after the above fix, without encountering a single hitch. The game is wicked good. Runs buttery smooth on my HD4850 at 1680x1050, everything max 4x AA. Not a single hiccup anywhere.

Please post your system specs. I've had problems with Fallout 3 due to nvidia drivers and SLI settings. Once I got all this sorted, I've had no crashes. But I don't know if any of this will apply to you.

There was a new patch released recently for Fallout 3. Have you tried installing that?

if you're using and older IDE (maybe even SATA?) drive to run the installation DVD you may need to reflash the firmware on the drive itself. Apparently the Securom DRM creates some problems with older drives if it doesn't recognize it correctly.

I did have a couple of problems with this.
After doing a bit of digging I found that stopping the tea-timer service found on Spybot search and destroy helps a bit.
Lowering the AA setting on the graphics can also help.
If you are still having problems then disabling all non essential applications will help.
I do get the odd crash but they happen less frequent with this game now I have applied some changes (Only used when playing this game).

I installed the game and it plays fine for me. The only issue I have with the game is that after 20-30 minutes of game play, it crashes. This has to do with the new ATI 9.1 drivers that I recently installed. These drivers also cause the same issue with my Civ IV Beyond the Sword game, which was working fine before the driver update. I am going to revert back to the older drivers - 8.9 or 8.10.

To happyhillbilly - Are you installing it from the DVD?

My Computer

yes im installing from a dvd and my computer is brand new so all the drivers and software is uptodate...

Here are some things you can try :
- Make sure you have admin rights - you most likely do I would assume
- Look in this folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\InstallShield and see if you have any folders pertaining to the games that are giving you issues. If you do, cut them out and paste them into a temp folder and try installing the games again.
- Test the DVD drive to see if it plays a movie or two - just to make sure the DVD reads the way it should even though it is new.
- Copy the contents on the DVD to the hard drive or desktop and try installing from there

Good Luck

Some games don't seem to get along with the GamerOSD utility that comes bundled with ASUS video adapters (at least under Vista x64). If you indeed have GamerOSD installed, I'd suggest you uninstall it and then clean-install the vidcard drivers.

weird cause now that i reformatted my hd fallout3 and every other game that ive been playing work excellent

Sounds like the game was conflicting with another program. This is why one of the things I said to do was to stop all non-essential processes/programs.
