Error Code 646

I have two updates for Excel and Word that when they go to be installed, I get an Error Code 646 and the install fails. I have tried to install with my firewall and virus scanner turned off also with no luck. I am running Vista Ultimate, 64 bit system. Any other ideas to solve this? Thanks..................critter

I tried to install it. Their were 4 different downloads. 3 of the 4 would not install saying they were for 32 bit systems. the one that did install just explained what the cleaner would do and terms... Thanks

How do I reset Windows Update components?

I just ran your last link and I am just checking....whatever you had me do removed every update I have ever installed on my pc since I've owned it. Is this what you wanted it to do???

Yes, what it does is to clear out any bad update and reset the update program to default.
It will hopefully fix your problem.

You hit the nail on the head. Whatever you had me do fixed the problem and I would like to thanks you very much. I really appriciate your assistance with this. Now, if the 2 ati 5870 cards I ordered would show up today it would really make me happy.

Hi guys finally I found a solution for this error 646 ,just disconnect the network after downloading while the windows is installing if didn’t work just restart the computer and don’t connect to the internet ,go back to the windows update and press install ,because they will be already downloaded ,and it will work (vista SP2)

Here's a few good threads that will help anyone with this error, but from my experience I would say, if you getting this, you should clean your pc up a bit and then re-download all previous updates first.


Then take a peek at these forum threads if ccleaner doesn't help.
