Solved error 2/8854 (_0000000.cdf-ms)

my vista blocks right after switch on (the account/password box never appears) then I get Black Screen - Movable Cursor.
- I get the error 2/8854 (_0000000.cdf-ms) or 4/8854 $ showing for a second.
I read many posts and tried all recommended solutions but failed to fix it. I tried all options from the recovery path like fix the start up etc. When I want to go back to previous correct configuration I get a message - catastrophic failure 0x8000FFFF.
I perfomed chdsk in command prompt . -no success.
The thing is I don't want to loose the data on my hard disk. ... otherwise I would just reinstall the system ...
Is there any way I can fix it from command prompt ? or any other way ?

Hello Con, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if doing a System Restore at boot using a restore point dated before this error may be able to fix it for you.

Try putting in the OS disk and do a Startup Repair, there is also away to repair user accounts in vista, youll have to do some googling though. Hope is not lost.

I did that .no success.. however when I tested memory it says I still have my files there ... so ?

Con,

You could do a Custom Install (not formating) of Vista instead. This way all files from your current installation will be placed in a C:\Windows.old folder in the new installation so you can copy what you want back out of it.

I would kindly like to thank you. It worked!! I only didn't do the custom install before, as it said I will loose all my data - but the data was indeed copied.
