Solved Email Error

Hi guys,
I have a HP laptop in my house and 6 days ago it was working fine. I then went on holiday and came back and the PC refused to boot. It launched itself into Startup Repair and seemingly did some roll-backs as I lost my antivirus and another program which I'd installed recently. It also reverted back to SP1 from SP2 which I installed as soon as it came out so I am unsure why it would revert back this far.
Since then I have finally reinstalled AVG antivirus (after 3 failed attempts) and put SP2 back on. All seems fine with the exception of my email account and general sluggish performance. I use Windows Mail to receive email and it is set to remember my credentials, but it asked me for them when I launched the program. I entered them and I can assure you that they were correct but it simply asked me for them again. I can also confirm that the account server settings are correct.
A different email account from the same ISP on a different user account works absolutely fine

Any ideas what could be the problem here as everything I know will not solve it???

Sounds like the email client is corrupt. The only solution that I can think of, if you are sure that it is not the email website, is to reinstall. Make a system restore point first and make sure email is saved.

Well, it seems to work fine on the non-administrator account, using the same client and therefore i'd guess, the same program files

Try this. The user account may be corrupt, rather than the email client.

Long shot. Go into your email account settings, and make absolutely sure that the user name is correct. It does exactly this to me if my user name is correct. For me, "richard" will generate this problem, but my entire email address "richard@***.***.co.uk" fixes it. Long shot, but you may as well try your email address.

I suppose that could work but ideally i'd like to keep the same client as the primary user of that email account prefers it that way

Long shot. Go into your email account settings, and make absolutely sure that the user name is correct. It does exactly this to me if my user name is correct. For me, "richard" will generate this problem, but my entire email address "richard@***.***.co.uk" fixes it. Long shot, but you may as well try your email address.

Yep, I've double checked and it has the full email address in the server settings box

I've had this happen to me occasionally with Outlook 2007. For no reason at all that I can determine, it will suddenly start asking over and over for me to login even though nothing has changed and I've changed nothing (when I first start - and sometimes it eventually "takes" and then an hour later starts again when scheduled to check for new mail). Nothing I do fixes the problem. Sometimes, restarting the program works. More often, to end it I need to reboot - and sometimes even that doesn't work the first time and I need to do it two or three times before it "takes" and then once the episode ends, things are fine again until the next time.

I personally think it's caused by the e-mail provider servers, but I can't prove that. It doesn't happen often enough for me to make an issue of it (once every few weeks or so). It sounds like it's happening much more often for you - perhaps even every time though you didn't indicate if you ever get it to work or if you need to go online to get your mail while you work this problem. If so, then your problem is much worse even if when it occurs the symptoms are the same and what works for me will probably not work for you - but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

While not Windows Mail, the symptoms sound similar. Perhaps restarting and/or rebooting will help you as well (though I fully realize it isn't a "solution" by any means and it is inconvenient and it doesn't always work and is at best a "sometimes works workaround").

I hope this helps (even if it isn't exactly a convenient "solution").

Could you please expand on the difference between the two accounts?

Have you moved on from the unknown reason for the "Holiday roll back issues"

Have you considered creating a new e-mail account in Windows Mail in the Admistrator Account with an identical configuration as the non-working account (assuming again they are correct) and then trying to use this "new" WM account as the default with automatic login to see if it gives you the same troubles? If not, then just import your old account into the new account and you should be good to go. If after importing the problem begins again in the new account that was working fine before, then there may be some issue with those account files (something that an import transfers). If the new account has the same problem before the import, then it's not the WM account itself causing the problem (but we've made progress at eliminating one possible cause) though it still could be some configuration setting that WM won't let you set in your account (which could possibly be a user profile corruption problem).

If you are going to install a new email from MS, it will be Will be Windows 2011. I have it and do not like it. I plan to switch. Here is a good list of alternatives

While there are many good free alternatives as Richard pointed out to WLM 2011 (which I'm still assessing - it seems better than WM - at least for newsgroups which is all I've ever used either product for), I personally really like Outlook for emails, calendar, contacts, task lists, and the like (I have 2007 and tried 2010 and found no reason to upgrade) even though it does cost a bit of money. But I've had one or another version of it since it first came out many years ago and I'm willing to pay for it because it really is very, very good and I can't imagine switching.

If you download a free 60-day trial of Office Professional Try Office 2010 - Microsoft Office, you can give it a try and see what you think. You may find you like it enough to even pay for it (you have to buy the whole Office Suite - Outlook isn't sold separately) even though it is rather expensive.

Just offering another alternative to consider despite the cost (if you do decide to switch from WM).

Actually, I hope we can help you fix WM so changing isn't necessary, and we haven't yet exhausted all options for doing that. Have you tried the new WM email account suggestion and how did it work?

Hooray. Problem solved. I changed the password on the ISP's website and that one seems to let me log in all of a sudden, which is strange considering I know that the old password was correct as it let me login to change it

Glad that is was sorted out. If you have problems with the mail again, you may want to consider switching to another client, as suggested.
