Don't install Realtek update from Windows

I downloaded:
"Realtek-Network-Realtek RTL8168B8111B family PCI-E Gigabyte Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)"
And my IE7 couldn't open any internet pages.
Had to Restore to a previous point to get internet navigation again.
Any advise?

You should always install drivers directly from the manufacturer's website instead.

I am trying to find out what drivers for Realtek are already installed in my pc.
A search with Windows Explorer doesn't find it. I am new to Vista from Windows Prof XP where I could find things quickly.

Now I'm afraid to download this driver when my machine is working fine.

Hit Windows-Break hotkey and click Device Manager. Right click on the network card, select properties then driver. It should give the driver date.

If it's working as fast as your hardware will go my advice is don't touch it. Just back your system up with an image backup program. I noticed when I tried to do a bunch of Windows updates at once, it backed off my network driver to an older version. Now I just do individual updates if I'm pretty sure they won't hose my machine(e.g. google for "update kbxxxx broke my pc" before installing!)

I just discovered how to get to the driver:
In Start Search type "Device Manager" to search, finds Device Manager and you left click on it and a window opens,
go down the list and find -Network Adapters and left click on it;
Right click Realtek...., window opens and select "Properties"; select Driver tab for driver info.
Or, Right click Realtek...., window opens and select "Update Driver Software" and goes to the internet to search and download update.

I couldn't help myself and let it download the update which is the exact name as in the Windows Update site.
Well, the same result: IE7 could not load any pages and had to Restore to previous point again.

LOL, well I'm glad you got it working again afterwards.

The normal method is to download the 64-bit driver in the ZIP file from the link above, extract the files, and run the setup file to install the driver.
