vista has WMP 11. and its well known there is no way to backup your music as was in XP.. isnt there a folder somewhere on C drive that holds the music library for WMP?? what if i MANUALLY moved each song to a cd and burned them .? then they would ALL be on a disc.... then when im done REFORMATTING my HD, and WMP is up and running, cant i then put CD in and import the songs back to WMP library??? somebody has to know something here about this topic...

WMP doesn't have a folder. It just has links to your Music folder. Nothing more. Imagine how much space it would take if WMP held 2 copies of your music library. It just holds links. So, backup your Music folder and everything in it if thats where you store your music.

thanks for a reply.. but what do you mean when you say it just has LINKS to my music folder? I did notice the file path to the music was in a cpl of places in user nancy music.... are you saying the music basically is on the hard drive in whatever folder and WMP is just a player that plays the music, it doesnt have a folder or a place of its own to store anything?
well my son imported a lot of songs from CDs directly onto MP... but by doing that , it doesnt mean music is actually ON MP? its imported to MP but its really being stored IN a folder where the music i have is stored??
there is 1 group of music though that he has from shared P2P.... that doesnt have a folder per say, one of those frostwire or limewire places, but i have long since uninstalled those. so basically he just puts songs into MP from his own CDs...cant i manually move some of them that may or may not be in any folder on my HD, to a CD and burn them?? then import them back to MP like my son does when he imports his CDs??

If he rips CD's they go to the default folder i.e. Music, and yes WMP just links to your music folder unless you change the default location. WMP has no folder.

can i ask, then how does the music go BACK to MP after im done with reformat? son uses WMP as his MP3 library. he plugs his player in after he opens WMP... so once reformat is done, as i said, how would he or me get the SONGS back into MP? even though they are in a folder in music section, they arent IN MP itself. would he have to copy and paste them from the music folder TO MP? if he plugs in the mp3 and there arent any songs in the MP once the player connects and syncs couldnt he lose them?

Are you doing a re-install because of a problem? why do you want/need to do a format?

If you are going to do a re-install there are several options other than a "clean install" which would not require re-installing MP.

Could you tell me what you are trying to do?

thanks

yes want a fresh OS on the HD having problems with recycle bin not emptying and TRIED EVERYTHING to fix it but it wont stay fixed. empties at comd prompt and thats it a 1x thing. cant drag and drop or copy and paste. all this was due to a virus cpl of months ago which has since then been cleaned, but it has left these issues and nothing seems to work to fix them....

anyways i figured out WMP, all the music is in fact in the music folder EXCEPT the songs from P2P. they were in a frostwire folder and that has long been uninstalled. so i tried to BURN just those songs to a cd, but it wouldnt work due to no files being found. so now i have these 70+ songs my son got from that P2P, and i cant get them burned to a cd, due to no files found since i got rid of the whole thing and folder and files went with it..BUT the song is able to play on WMP while its in the library. but as soon as i move it to the burn list it cant burn due to no files found.....doesnt make sense... the song is there and can be played, but when i try to burn it , it wont burn cause no files are found...... so i dont know what he will do with those 70+ songs now.... when he goes to sync his mp3 AFTER the REFORMAT THOSE songs will be gone because i couldnt burn them

Got you. can you check the files extenions (ie *.mp3), can you also see if you can drag them to the desktop and burn. It may just be a permssions problem.

(ie *.mp3), what does the star represent? should that be included or is there a word that should go there? i tried dragging whatever files to a cd, nothing tried to a USB drive folder, nothing tried copying and nothing...yes i tried the desktop with my pics... all i wanted to do was backup, but with vista home basic, i didnt have OPTIONS of what i wanted backed up, and i dont want the whole drive because something is corrupted and who wants that on a clean install of vista??? not me.. i just wanted to save my contacts for email , my favorites all the music and pictures i dont care about the rest... so another forum showed me how to use my vista cd and go to command prompt and notepad and thru that i could move folders and backe up to my USB flashdrive, and it worked... so now all i have to do is move the music folder/files and all my pictures to a USB... i have to figure out what to do with the 70+ songs though that have no files that i can burn... my son will be very upset about all those songs. but there is no way i can move them to a cd from WMP cause it cant find the folder or files where music is..

i typed in the search box this....*.mp3 and only 37 songs came up... how can that be? all showed up in C users nancy music.. i have tons of music....a lot are from CDs being imported. some were purchased from itunes or rhapsody and some came from that P2P frostwire or limewire... but WAY more then 37

Nancy we can get this to work. All the music will not have an *.mp3 extension. there are others. were you able to drag a song to the desktop?

no i opened WMP and the songs that dont have a folder anymore when i click to drag them to desktop they have a circle with a black line thru it....
i went into user nancy music and opened a folder and tried to drag THAT to the desktop. it doesnt work.. believe me we have tried a ton of things and i think people have given up because they know im reformatting

the circle with the X is saying you cant drag and drop that here. that can also be a permissions problem. they way you can find out is to go to a folder and right-click it. goto properties and click the security tab. there you will see the ppl who can access the folder and who the owner is. see the enclosed pic. if you aren't the owner you can take ownership (there is a tutorial on how to do it) using the tutorial here in the tutorial section. Once you are the owner you should be able to see, edit, and move them

If its your user folder you have all the permissions you need. Press F3 at the dekstop and in the advanced search box look for .mp3's by music category in the advanced settings. Also look for .wma, .mka, and .aac

As before WMP simply links to all your files on your hard drive.
