If so, what modem or modem/router do you have? Is it better to have a modem and then buy your own router for this? Or is it better to have their 2wire solution? Will it make much difference to have the 1701HG or the 2701HG? Anyone care to comment?

The 2701 is a nice unit. It can be used as a bridge and then you could purchase a nice wireless router if you wanted to.

I used to support those units, they are pretty solid units. The wireless by default is WEP and you wont get any free support for wireless using WPA, other than that though, the router is nice :)

I have had the gateway 1701 for at least 5 years on Windows 98, Vista and Windows 7. No problem at all. Unless you have a special situation, I suggest stay with what you have.

If you have something already and its working for you, leave it alone lol. No reason to upgrade unless its broken.
