Disk Defragment

I've had my PC since the end of Feb. I check defragmenter regularly and each time it says my file performance is good...no need to defrag at this time. Should I defrag anyway? BTW, I'm running McAfee which has a disk defrag app. and it always gives me the same message...No need to defrag at this time.

The vista built in defrag is set to run on a schedule, so its probably done many defrags and you just havent been aware its doing it.

If you want to do a manual defrag download and unzip this Utilities.zip It has three shortcuts in it that use command windows and will defrag the system better than the standard gui defrag.

Mine is not set to defrag on schedule. The "run on schedule" box is unchecked. Do I need to defrag even though it says I don't need to?

If you havent defragged since february then i think you should. Use the Defrag All shortcut in the zip file and it will open a command window. Just leave that window open and try not to use your pc while its running. Once its complete the window will automatically close and you should then reboot your pc.

If an app says you don't need to, then don't. It depends on what how you use your pc/laptop. If you frequently uninstall programs, delete files, then defrag once a week. Otherwise twice a fortnight is enough, if necessary.

My two laptops have a "defrag" at least once a fortnight, manually, as part of my ongoing computer "housework".

Well I would suggest you use Defraggler, you can set a schedule and you have something to watch not a percentage. ;)
