Disc Drive problems!

Hey! I'm having a very annoying issue. Whenever I put a disc into the Disc Drive it wont read or acknowledge that I put something in. It first started about a week ago when I tried to play a DVD, but ever since then the disc drive wont work. The hard drive doesn't even do anything when I put a disc in. Maybe the drivers got disabled or deleted somehow?? I'm very unsure of what to look for and where to look for it. So if someone could kindly help me I would be veeeeryyy thankful! :D

Hello Caleb, and welcome to Vista Forums.

If you have a desktop, then see if shutting down the computer and connecting the DVD drive to a different SATA port on the motherboard and restarting the computer may help any. Sometimes doing this will allow it to be redetected and work properly again.

Thanks for the reply! Its actually a laptop that I'm having the issue with. I did however try restarting it to see if that would fix it... but it didn't..

When you open Device Manager in the Control Panel (Classic View) and expand DVD/CD-ROM drives to double click on to open the Properties page, what does it say under the General tab? Does it give you anything other than "This device is working properly" under "Device status"?

If not, then can you manually open the DVD drive window from within the Computer window to access the files?

I just did everything that you said. All it says is, "This device is working properly."

I also brought up the "Computer" window. But when there isn't a CD/DVD in the disc drive, the icon wont show up. So I tried putting a CD in again... but nothing shows up..

You might see if doing a System Restore using a restore point dated before you had problems with DVD drive to see if that may help.

If it still will not show back up, then you may have a lose cable connecting the drive. If your not comfortable checking this for a laptop, then you might take it in to be serviced to see what they say is wrong with the DVD drive.

I think that I will try reinstalling the drivers. What do I need to do exactly, delete the old one first?

You will most likely need to reinstall your motherboard chipset drivers and any DVD drivers available from your computer manufacturer's website.

I went to Acers(my laptop brand) website to try and find out what kind of DVD Drive I have. But I cant seem to find out. I think it might be a Toshiba DVD Drive but I'm not sure. Is there any way for me to find out what it is?

I actually just realized something. When I had gone to my Device Manager to look for the DVD/CD-ROM tab I didn't find a tab that said that. But there's a tab that said "Disc Drives" so I figured, that must be it. But I just discovered that the Disc Drives tab is for my hard drive.. oops! But there isn't a tab that says "DVD/CD-ROM" anywhere. (Right This seems strange, so I will attach you what you should be seeing)

If you go to Device Manager and click on the CD/DVD-ROM Drives tab, it will expand and your CD Drive make and model will be there, if you tell me it I can find the drivers for you and also if you double click the drive then a dialog should apear, there will be a tab at the top of it that says "Driver" click it and below you should see some buttons, I recommend you try disabling the drive, then re-enabling it the same way see if that works if not you can do the method i just told you, but instead of disbling it (Make sure its enabled) Click uninstall drivers.

Once the process is complete exit the diaglog box and take a look @ the icon next to the drive it should have changed, double click it again the click "Driver" and hopefully there should be a option to re-install the drivers from the internet click it and there re-installed.

The attached picture is what I'm seeing. The problem is that there is no DVD/CD-ROM tab anymore.

My Laptop model is a.. Acer Aspire 4520.

Here is the link below for your Acer Aspire 4520 driver downloads. Just select Notebook, Aspire, Aspire 4520 there, then download and install the chipset drivers to see if that may help.

could you help me out with which driver it is, on there that I need? Is it the only one that says, "Chipset Drivers?" I dont mean to take up all your time, and I hope I'm not becoming a bother... haha.

Na, you would just need to download the driver to your desktop, then install and most likely restart the computer.
