DEP Closing Fraps

I didn't want you to have it. I thought maybe if you had it, it was manifesting itself via the DEP problem. This is a good read on it-
i dont have EMET and never had it installed, i even didnt knew it existed before you told me.

I hear that a new extended kernel version is available. Probably more likely to help the OP than anything suggested here.
Interesting. I have iTunes 12.1.3.6 installed. When I launched it this morning, it wanted to download 12.12xxxx. I said yes but I don't know if it did or where it downloaded to. I later downloaded 12.12 and tried to install it. However, it said I needed a later version of the Windows Installer Service.
I would suggest uninstalling Apple Software Update, since you already have the last version that supported Vista. If you have an established iTunes library, then downgrading to 11.1.5 to avoid DEP errors would be more trouble than it’s worth. Imacri used to advise against 11.1.5 because 12.1.3 included security updates. I would say a 2015 version has no meaningful security advantage over a 2014 version in 2022 - and if you globally disable DEP because 12.1.3 drives you nuts, then your system would actually be substantially less secure. I don’t think either version remains useful except as playback software, and VLC is much more up-to-date for that purpose.

Vistaar- I was just responding to your statement concerning iTunes in post 8. I've never had a problem with it. I only keep it around because it seems the codecs are required to play .mov. As you would say, this isn't the place to discuss the last statement. I don't need 12.12.

Joadix100- Looking at the event logs, it seems you've had problems with other programs but, for Fraps errors, you're repeatedly getting the 0xc0000005 error. I suggest opening a command prompt as the administrator (right click on Command Prompt and select "run as administrator") and running SFC /scannow. If it finds and fixes any problems, reboot and run it again to make sure everything is fixed. Try the Fraps installation again. If it fails, I suggest running chkdsk C:/f from an adminstrative command prompt.

Hopefully, Joadix100 knows that running sfc /scannow would ruin his extended kernel?

My guidance is on page 1. If he’s smarter than we are, he could run sfc /verifyonly and study the CBS log to see if there is any corruption other than the extended kernel files. If there is, then it’s time to reinstall the OS...but what if there is not?

If he runs a system restore point before running SFC, would that be acceptable. I don't think chkdsk would be affected.

i know because i did it once XD

Edit: When you run SFC /Scannow it justs replaces the extended kernel files and, at least for me, just that, you can boot the system again with no issues, and run the ExKernel installer again to restore the files, BUT i think i was probably lucky and for other people running sfc scannow would ruin the entire installation.

i dont see how the HDD may be responsible for the DEP problem, and also CHKDSK takes a loooooong time to complete, but i did it like 3 or 4 months ago and it was all fine, do you want me to do it now?

ok i will, and about that, where do i find the results of the chkdsk?

Edit, i ran the chkdsk without the /f so it only did a scan and it did not find any bad sectors.

Neither do I. If you were running vanilla Vista x64 like wither 3, I don’t think this thread would exist.

I agree that the HD probably isn't the issue but we need to cover the bases. Nobody has answered the question about whether or not system restore works for Vista with the extended kernel. If it did, you could run sfc with confidence. There's a whole host of other things you can do to identify the cause of the error code but, like most error codes, the fixes are about the same such as looking at driver issues.

system restore does not affect the extended kernel files, so if i run sfc it will break them, and about the HDD, yesterday i took it out, it is making horrible noises, the bearings of the arm are dying so i cloned the contents to a 1TB 3.5 HDD and put a 120GB SSD on the laptop, i reinstalled Vista and well, Vista with an SSD is totally WORTH it, the even dough i have SATA 2 Limiting my speeds, now im installing all the updates and stuff to make it usable again, along with the extended kernel later when i install the server 2008 updates, fraps will probably launch with no problem now.
