Defrag so slow

I thought I had asked this before but upon searching I found that I did'nt and could not find anyone else posting about this, so here I go again

I like using Auslogics Defrag, but its taking an absolute eternity to defrag, I tend to defrag after every install of a game and I installed another game this afternoon and its still defragging now, is this normal?? does'nt feel like it

My only thought is and I'm just guessing that would it be at all down to the fact that I have disabled index searching, or even the system restore being on?

I'm annoyed at the fact that its taken almost all afternoon to defrag and counting

Any ideas?

Hi Chris,

This is certainly not normal behaviour for Auslogics Defrag, which is usually quite quick. I am wondering if this, and the problem you have had here: http://www.vistax64.com/gaming/208206-what-night.html#post957573, are linked. When you boot your system, how long does it take before the desktop appears?

Just had to shoot off and do a re-boot to try to give you an accurate as possible answer, I would say and I was counting in my mind so its not perfect, but I would say close to 1 minute to boot

Have you ran the diagnostics on that drive from the drive manuf. site ? ?
Doesn't sound normal for Auslogics and that drive may be going South...

Well it better not be going as thats it then, no new HD for me, its a Seagate Barracuda 500 Gig

I have'nt done that no, not sure if they have such a thing, I'll take a look

Thanks, I got the tools, and am almost done although its currently on a Long Generic Test, once I have all the results I'll post back

I realy hope my drive is still good as I really now cannot afford a new HD, I know you can probably get them cheap on the Net, but that is a no go for me as I have no credit cards and my Mum has to do it and she won't plain and simple, so my only other option is to buy from my Computer guy and as I have just bought and will be getting a new case and PSU end of the week, the last thing I can do is afford a new HD

I really hope that that is not the case

Just finished using the Seagate Tools and this is what came back:

Smart = Pass
Short DST = Pass
Long DST = Pass
Drive Information = Identify Pass
Short Generic = Pass
Long Generic = Pass

I am not going to do the advanced tests as it came up with a warning about possibly making my drive unusable (not a risk I am prepared to take)

So with at least the results above surely this means my HD is ok, or would it mean that I must do the advanced tests? not happy about doing that though

I guess I am just looking for you guys to confirm or reassure me that my HD is fine, I know it says pass for everything and that anyone other than me would be quite happy, but I am not tech nut and am still worried about the close to 1 minute boot time.

Hi chris

your HDD seems fine from the results you've posted.

When you have a bit of time

You may want to try a little test to see if there is a startup item that is causing your delay in starting

First have a look here ...

download and Run the program it will give you a reboot time

Press the start orb and type MSCONFIG.MSC and run the program that appears on the list.

Go to the startup tab and click the disable all button - click OK and select exit without re-boot

run the reboot test and see what the difference in speed is

Go back into MSconfig after you have finished and re-enable all your items.

If there is a significant improvement in reboot well can then look at your startup items and see what we can do to improve things

Thank you for that great tool, never knew about it, and well here is what happened:

After having followed your instructions I got a reboot time of 78

I then re-enabled all the items that I need and it went up to 82

I guess this is not good?

Hi chris,

I would say that those results are not too bad at all (around about 80 sec is about the average) :D and the two figures are quite close so your start-up programs are not causing too much of a lag.

so now we have to see why your defrag is taking such a long time - When you run the defrag are you doing any other things on the computer or do you leave it to "get on with things" ?

Well with one game I left it for ages and it was getting nowhere fast, then I thought, to hell with this, and started to surf around came and started posting here lol then on other times I have done other things, like play music and the like

Test Drive Unlimited is a classic example of taking ages, and Gears of War

Just clutching at straws now, but when I had done my last format, I did'nt install the drivers for my Motherboard from its disk (as they are way out of date) I went to the Abit site and got the ones that I thought were the latest and for my particular motherboard, if I got and installed the wrong ones, would that be a likely culprit?

Hi chris,

if your not sure of which drivers you need let me know your full M/B details and I'll see if I can find them for you :D

That could cause a problem but It could also be a few other things

The drive could be badly fragmented and thus need a long time to be fixed.

if you change your de-fragmenting software it may take a long time because each software uses a different set of rules, and the software needs to bring things into line.

If you running short of space on the drive it will take longer to perform the defrag as the software has to work in smaller chunks.

What I always try to do is run a defrag when I can leave the PC running for a few hours - best over night - what I find then is once it has done one defrag the next one takes less and so on untill It only takes a short time to complete

Hi Nigel,

I'd appreciate it if you could help me with the Motherboard stuff as I really am not sure what I am doing, the information I can give you I hope is enough as I only really have the box and manual to go by, here is what it says:

ABit AW9D (I know Stormy told me that ABit is going so that puts me in a dodgy position as once this Motherboard goes, where to next, but that is something I don't want to think about

I really only know that its an AW9D not sure what else you need to know, and where I would easily find it, I guess it means removing the panel? I hope not as its not easy for me to do as in a few seconds, I'd have to unplug everything and get it onto the floor and then take the panel off and then the whole process of plugging everything in again before I can get back to you, but let me know Nigel

Its just not possible to see it from where I am positioned as you'd have to be a contortionist, and I'm not lol

Hi Chris,

Good news is the Abit UK site is still running, and the components used on the board that may need driver updates in the future are all from major companies so should be available direct, from the manufacturer, if ever needed :D

It looks like the driver you need is the v 9.0.0.1007 intel chipset driver - they show two versions of the motherboard, (see below), but as far as I can see the drivers are the same

You may want to check the actual board you have, If you can, as the manual is probably the same for both, saying that, as I've said above, the drivers for both show the same revision and issue date so should be the same anyway.

At the bottom of the page they show the actual SATA driver but as this dates to 2006 it is probably the one that you have anyway.

Thanks for the info and the links, its ok to install over the top of whats on the system? only I can't see them listed in Add/Remove programs

Yes the manual I have lists two, the AW9D and the AW9D Max, I have to say that when I looked at the manual I started to wonder which I had, and hate it when they do that as for people like me, (can't be many lol heaven forbid lol) it gets confusing and frustrating because then you don't know which drivers you need etc.........

Well no difference on the defrag front, still taking an eternity to do, short of uninstalling Auslogics and re-downloading it I have no idea what to think or do

In an attempt to get a faster defrag done, I installed Smart Defrag and whilst it was much faster, I noticed that afterwards it had a few items saying

Not enough space!!! I mean not enough space I have a 500 Gig HD and it currently has 322 Gig free

So now my happiness at a faster defrag has been shattered by that revelation

Take a look in the settings/program settings then in the defrag tab set the cpu to highest and try that. Also when was the last time you ran the disk cleanup tool.
