Data (F:)

Hello Everyone! I Just bought a new computer last weekend and it has come with Vista. It is a Acer PC. My question is kinda dumb, I went to my computer and noticed that I have another drive called Data (F. I don't know what this is for and it is compleatly empty. Is it another drive I can use to put files on? If so can I put my games on it? My game takes up lots of space on c: drive and it would be great to it have a drive of its own.

It's a partition on your hard drive and you can safely save games there.

Sheesh, when they said empty, I assumed they checked the file size.

My C: Drive says it has 291 GB of Space on it and the Data (F Drive says it has 291 GB of space on it too which is all empty.

Cool yes deff. put games and such on a different disk and that big of a drive you can back up important stuff from your other drive in case your primary takes a ####.

Awsome!!!! I hate that my games take up so much space so this is great. Do I have to reinstal the games on the other drive, or can I copy and paste them to the new drive? I am trying to move the sims 3 game.

You should be able to copy the whole folder over to the other drive and it should work fine.Sorry for the late reply I was also gaming.3 hours goes by so fast playing TF2.Its gotten very stale and I never liked it from the start really.At least I got it for free from my nephew.

The companies all do that nowadays, I think it's tu put your files and backups in there, but it's up to you what you want to do with it.

The easiest way to move everything is to go to the start menu > right click on "Games" in the right pane > Properties > Location tab > Move > select a folder on your the F: partition from Computer (you must define the folder (any old folder name) on F: first). If you do it that way, your whole games path will be changed and you can for example still click "Games" in the start menu to get there.

Okay, so I copied and pasted everything. I first copied the EA games folder out of "My Documents" and pasted it to F: Drive. Then I created my own "Program Files" folder since there wasn't one on F: Drive. Then I copied the EA games folder out of that and pasted it into the new "Program Files" Folder. I tried to launch the game out of F: Drive and all seemed to work just fine. I have one last dumb question though, can I delete the game and all of it's contents off of C: Drive now? And will the game run as long as it is on F: Drive? I created a back up DVD of my game just in case I sqrew things up. Sorry for all the questions this is a new toy for me

You can't just copy/paste/delete a program (game), as information is written to the registry. You can uninstall the game, reinstall the game, and specify the f: directory as the target directory.

Copying/pasting/deleting documents is just fine.

If you do what I posted earlier (Move from Properties Location tab), your registry and everything will be adjusted. Copy/paste works for data, but then you have to establish a new path to it (e. g. with a shortcut). So here the "Move" is more intelligent too.

Again, just to clarify, you would uninstall Sims 3 on your C: drive and reinstall it on your F: drive. That goes for any program.

When I partition, my personal scheme is to place programs in one partition and data on the other. But I deal with HUGE data sets (1GB or more). Since you are probably not doing that, your scheme is certainly fine.

Sorry you are right. Games is the only one where it does not work. I should have checked that beforehand. But all the others work (Documents, Music, Pictures, Favorites). Try this: Go to Games (Saved Games) in Explorer (in the left pane) and try right click on there.

I can't seem to get that to work, I go to start menu, I typed in "games" Right clicked on "games explorer" opened properties but there was no location tab. When I opened the actual "saved games" file it was empty. "Games explorer" had all the games inside it's folder. Any other ideas? Should I just install it on F: drive? I created a folder to put things in on F: drive so the game can go there. That's if it works that way.

Well at least we tried And of course thank you too all the people who have tried to help. I just have one final question then, when I install the game on F: drive... should I have a folder in there to save the game to? Such as a "program files" or a "documents" folder? There currently is nothing at all on the F: drive.
