Creative Driver and Vista x64

Yes hopefully they work. People are still complaining however that even with the drivers before this set, they still get poping and crackling on Vista if they have 4 or 8 GB's of ram with the X-Fi cards.

I hope the new driver set works. What some people have done and are starting to do more and more, is dump Creative and get soundcards like the Xonar or are using onboard sound, as on most motherboards, the onboard sound is actually really good.

ASUS with ADI codecs on most of their high end boards, and Intel with IDT(Sigmatel) chips on theirs.

Dumped Creative, and used my mobo onboard sound, never had any regrets:)
Either Creative continues to play stupid, or make some damn good drivers.

I tried the new set of drivers...now working fine.they enable the CMSS-3D function for vista x64.now i got all 7 channels working. But i have to test some games for cracking sounds.Anyone test the drivers?...

EQ2 still pops and cracks in certain zones. The new voice feature they added pops and cracks so bad that I can barely hear other people. I played with the settings with no success.

I think the new drivers are a move in the right direction. Creative could release perfect drivers for Vista and I would still never buy another Creative Labs product again.

EQ2 sounds fine on my 2008 iMac. No pops and cracks. What's sad is the iMac's sound card is onboard! LOL! <--No I'm not an Apple fan bot. I just like OSX while hating Apple's lies about Vista and Windows.

I dumped Creative 2 years ago, and got a CMEDIA 8768+ card, and then in March 2007, I upgraded to a CMEDIA 8788HD card, in my case it was the HT Omega Claro.

[Off Topic]Dave,

Can you guess just why I love that quotation? :P

re: iMac sound - is it the same chipset? That is one thing to consider.

re: iMacs in general - I maintain a lab of 25 of them at school, and I have to say it is a snap to maintain them and to get things done - I interviewed this past Tuesday for a new position in IT, and one question I was asked was which would I prefer, PC, Mac, or Linux. Obviously the guy meant Windows, but semantics aside, I told hime honestly - I have been using WIndows for so long, and will continue to use WIndows because more Windows based machine user need help than Mac users or Linux users - it's my money making tool.

As for things worknig, Macs work well - I just added half to room today to the University Active Directory forest so that students can use the Macs the same way as any PC in the other computer labs, and I swear it took less than a minute per machine. That included logging out of limited user account, logging in as administrator adding to the AD and deleting old limited user (local) account.

But, my answer said I would pick Linux over Mac because Macs are too restrictive - I want complete and total hardware freedom - and they don't allow that.[/Off Topic]

OK, as for Creative, well, they dropped the ball 2.5 years ago when they were invited to develop drivers for the then emerging Vista Beta 1 - and didn't.

Taht is all I will say about Creative.

The creative drivers are so messy, half of it gets installed to program files x86. I dont know about anyone else, but i like having my hardware drivers all in 64 bit. There isnt even an uninstaller for the driver package in add/remove programs which is usually a sign of bad quality.

The only way they're going to sort this out is to start the drivers from scratch, & all of it in 64 bit for us with x64 o/s.

If they release a new card instead of sorting the drivers out, i dont think ill buy it. I have this feeling they've done it on purpose so that you spend another £50+ on the xfi2, only for it not to work on windows 7, then they bring out another card that will work with that.

very wrong

1. All drivers on x64 must be 64-bit, they cannot be installed otherwise.
2. What you see in x86 folder is supporting software bundle that is shared among different win platforms and 32 is common denominator for those. No drivers. Just apps like console launcher, volume panel, etc. They wouldn't work any better in 64 bit.

You could instead thank Creative for nice software bundle... and that they provide them for all x64 Vista.

My Computer

Ok this is really annoying me now...

i wish I had have read this stuff before!!

ive recently upgraded to vista 64 from xp pro. At the same time, I got a new HDD, some more RAM and a new soundcard... an X-Fi extreme gamer fatality pro. I use it with 7.1 cambridge/creative speakers.

I am now regretting that choice.. for 2 days, I have stuffed around trying to get the damn thing to work.

First off, it installed OK. But, sound was only coming out of the front 3 speakers. It registered that I wanted 7.1, but all the sound came from the front.

So i figured it must be a driver problem.

Every time I try install the new driver, it does not seem to install to the right place - in that once installed, vista decides to tell me that it has found new hardware and automatically starts installing new drivers for it - the old ones. or even worse, now it is stuck there with a big yellow ! ....

I have tried dozens of different ways to get this thing to work. I have deleted everything with 'created' in it more than a dozen times, and still, the same problems keep coming back.

Ive only had the sound card for a few days - so i am planning on taking it back to the shop if i cant get it to work by monday... and change it for something.. but what?

anyone got any suggestions on wtf i am doing wrong?

im running intel cor duo 2 2.66g
6g ram
750gb hdd
nvidia 9800gx2

cheers
mick

EDIT. ive got it back to life - a bit. I've installed a newer driver.. 2.18.6 which is a beta. on the speaker tests through speaker wizard, the majority of sound comes from the front 3 speakers, while random sounds come from the others.

Also, when using conrol panel / sound / playback / speakers, the chime noise comes from each of my speakers EXCEPT the front centre - which seems to play most of the noise for the other test. It also plays the subwoofer vibration correctly.

At a loss for what to do now....

EDIT 2: (if anyones out there?) I have sucessfully upgraded all my Creative software and now, 2 out of the 4 tests play side left/right and rear/left right sounds properly - the other two do not. the ones that play side left and side right do not play front centre. the other 2 still play all sounds out of the front 3. no idea.

I dont think there's any way you can make creative's drivers work with an SB X-Fi card if you have Vista 64 and 4Gb or more memory. Either
1) Drop Sb X-Fi hardware on Vista 64 and use your onboard sound
2) Drop SB X-Fi hardware on Vista 64 and go with Asus

I physically smashed my X-Fi card out of frustration and ordered an Asus Xonar D2X/XDT soundcard. Now I can play my games without getting a heart attack ;-)

Hello,

I have got my x-fi extremegamer fatality pro working on vista 64.. it just took me a lot of time and stuffing around.

The way i did it turned out to be simple, but there was lots of steps in between and trial and error.

I installed everything off the supplied driver/software bundle disc (that im guessing is NOT made for vista 64).

Used creative auto update to update everything

downloaded the latest creative driver

at this point - it still doesnt work - device manager shows a generic audio device, and you cant update the driver (continually times out)

in programs, uninstall creative - custom, and only remove the audio driver

restart, and run the driver you downloaded.

it then works perfectly.

in relation to my issues with the sound coming from wrong speakers.. i am a retard. :o when i checked all the attachments, i saw that each one was in the right hole and should have been working. HOWEVER the front centre speakers copper actually folded up and went along side the connector plate, not into it.

Creative actually helped me solve that one - i found their technical help via email to be very good and efficient (they helped with both).

so now i have great sound from all my games and music, and dont have to buy anything else.

:D

Incorrect. I run Vista x64 and have a X-Fi and 8gigs at home.

I built this system over a year ago, and even the drivers back then were fine with 4+ gigs of memory.

I never had to jump through any hoops to get it working, and have used both the drivers supplied with Windows Update and off of Creative Labs' website. Both worked without issue.

025chryss, hate to say it but that card is just too old and will never see Vista drivers from Creative. The only option that you have for a driver for it is to try what KrossX said. or you can try this driver that was modded to work in Vista,

New SB Live! 4.1/5.1 Vista drivers "SB Live Naimad Mod LB_2_15_0002" 23-08-07 - Windows Vista - Creative Labs

Other than that the only other alternatives if you want to continue to use that card are to use an operating system that has a working driver (and even then they will be a few years old), or get a new card (or use onboard audio).
