CPU OC Wall?

Ya I think you've possibly hit a wall John. but what you should do. is stay at 3.2 GHz and just be happy with that. you can try for a little more of you'd like. but it will be high volts. I just managed to hiot 3.66 GHz and I'm running 1.4875, so I'm still under 1.5v and thats where I wanna be. anything under that. I'm only at this speed for a few benchies and then I'm back to my usual 3.4 GHz. Thats a good even spot for me I'd decided.

You should stay at 3.2 but crank it up to 1.6v and mess around. see how things go. just to see if you can get past that wall, or hole. but then go back to stock settings.

and If i didn't mention it. I did the pencil vdroop mod. and I'm not stable at 3.4 GHz with only 1.425v and before I had to use 1.4725 thats not bad personally. you might wanna give that a try if you dare. I think it's a good idea. that might get you down a few. allow you to go to 3.33 GHz at the same voltage your at now. Just a thought.

oh and I've posted this on this site a few times. and in my sig. but tonight I jsut completed my most recent OC to 3.66 GHz I talked about above. Here's my Mark06 Scores. I'm exited.

Sticking in the 3.2 range is sage advice. While I realize you want to see if the chip can go higher, at this point, due to voltage, the risk is too great. Not to say you'll fry the core at 1.5, but really why bother? Games aren't cpu limited; rather, they're gpu limited. Another couple hundred MHz isn't going to do anything for you.

Ya it's pretty decent for your first try.. You can enjoy it there. or you can see what it can take, and for how long. then get the new CPU you originally wanted.

I ma going to hold off where I am at simply because of the wall. I think that when I upgrade the CPU (and most likely the mobo to the FTW) and have the 260 in here then I'll play again.

besides, classes start in less than a week, work starts in a couple of days and I am behind in my schedule to get everything installed again....

If this is the first time you've OC'd then you should really give yourself a pat on the back. You did quite well with a notoriously finicky chipset and a chip that is picky.

I tried to overclock mine. Not very well and I am knowledable. Guess my chip must have been one of the chips that are not as overclockable as the overs. I know every chip is different, but mine had to be one that was born with a wodden spoon in its mouth.

well Roy, whats your 6600's VID.

oh and John. It's not on the CPU. it's on the motherboard.. There is a little resistor on the board that you shade over with a pencil, and it makes less heat get out and a few other technical things and makes the vdroop lower.

So basically I was stable at 3.4 GHz at 1.4625, anything lower Prime gets errors but after the pencil mod I'm not 3.4 GHz stable at 1.425v
not everyone gets that good of a result. but it does help a little. but in your case still probably not worth the risk. so just leave it at that.

Here is a look at the voltages from hdware monitor


I have looked on google and there are all sorts of voltages.

I dont want to play with voltage at the moment becuase my system actually works fast.

When I decide to upgrade that is when I will overclock properly. If I blow up the processor then it will not matter as I will be buying anyway.
