Constant BSOD :(

My partner and myself built a new system and installed Vista x64 Ultimate on it. During the install we kept getting the BSOD, looked up the net and found out that it wouldnt install with 8gb of ram so we installed it with 2 and added the other 6 after install and that worked fine.

Now everytime windows starts, after about 10 seconds, sometimes less the blue screen comes on and the system restarts.

We have tried everything we can possibly think of. Here is what we put in the machine

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
nVidia GeForce 9800GT 1024MB PCI-E
500GB Seagate Barracuda SATA2 16MB ST3500418AS 7200RPM
MSI P45 NEO2-FR iP45 Socket 775 Motherboard
OCZ 8GB PC2-6400 DDR2 C5 Quad Channel Platinum Low Latency XTC (4x2GB)
Samsung 22x SH-S223F DVD±RW SATA - Black

Any help would be so appreciated.

Blou Screens are a result of buggy/bad drivers or hardware issues.

You have not provided enough info to determine your issue.

A BSOD states the driver/hardware error: i.e., "0x0000003B: The SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION"

See below for example:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 3b
BCP1: 00000000C0000005
BCP2: FFFFF800022D4DE2
BCP3: FFFFFA600B0C4D50
BCP4: 0000000000000000
OS Version: 6_0_6001
Service Pack: 1_0
Product: 768_1

Which means...

BCCode: 3b
BCP1: 00000000C0000005 Memory access violation
The SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION bug check has a value of 0x0000003B. This indicates that an exception happened while executing a routine that transitions from non-privileged code to privileged code.

Possible cause- Graphics card
This error has been linked to excessive paged pool usage and may occur due to user-mode graphics drivers crossing over and passing bad data to the kernel code.

Could you please let Clareyq know how to capture the necessary information contained in their BSOD when it appears and I to would like to know how you get it be it that it normally is only displayed on our screens for a few seconds.

If you could let us know in simple language that would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

OK

I have downloaded a program that will allow me to open and read crash dump files.

Attach the C:\Windows\Minidump folder (zip it), attatch to post, and I will tell you what driver/hardware issue you have. with a detailed analysis.

Sounds like a RAM issue.

I'd run a memcheck (control panel>admin tools) on your Ram....it could be a bad stick. It will let you know pretty quickly if there is a memory problem.

First though, try using just one stick. I know my friend and I built his rig, and his would only work with one stick, though all were good.... it was a wtf? moment.

0x24: NTFS.SYS
This indicates a problem occurred in ntfs.sys, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS drives

Cause
One possible cause of this bug check is disk corruption. Corruption in the NTFS file system or bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk can induce this error. Corrupted SCSI and IDE drivers can also adversely affect the system's ability to read and write to disk, thus causing the error.

Another possible cause is depletion of nonpaged pool memory. If the nonpaged pool memory is completely depleted, this error can stop the system. However, during the indexing process, if the amount of available nonpaged pool memory is very low, another kernel-mode driver requiring nonpaged pool memory can also trigger this error.

Resolve:
Run sfc/scannow
Check disk for file system errors bad sectors
To resolve a nonpaged pool memory depletion problem: Either add new physical memory to the computer (thus increasing the quantity of nonpaged pool memory available to the kernel), or run the Vista diagnostic memory Test to check your installed RAM- If your drive comes up clean, then this problem is probably the issue with your RAM sticks; either they are bad, or not supported (i.e, issue with the MoBo-possibly defective). Try running with just the 2GB for the time being.

Thanks for this, I will run these tests in the morning if I feel confident enough to do it myself. If not I'll wait until my partner gets home from work.

I will keep you updated.

Thanks for taking the time to help, we really appreciate it.

I had that exact problem when one of my RAM sticks went bad - BSOD relating to NTFS.SYS and other disk related files. My first thought was a failing hard drive but it turned out to be bad stick - it seems the O/S caches these files to memory and if the memory fails or the O/S can't retrieve the information it will crash.... I sent the RAM back and got a replacement under it's lifetime guarantee.
