Connection and DNS problems

Hey

Firstly please bear with me as I am clueless and some what a computer noob. :P

I have three computers, two with XP and the other which is new with Vista. My new computer with Vista on it is causing me no end of problems. :/ Basically it wont connect to the internet .. it does briefly then won't. Ive tried to repair and fix it but to no avail. It says that I have a DNS problem, have tried the ipconfig/flushdns, but that doesn't work. I have read lots of forums regarding this but seriously I am a noob and dont understand half the stuff it says for me to do.. I know its sad but true!

I am thinking there could be a conflict between my xp and vista through my router, but once again havent got a clue how to check it .. or if I need to buy a new one, which is the one I should get.

Any help would be appreciated, I am sorry for being so clueless, just well bleh I am. :P

Go into the network controller properties. Click on the the NIC properties and find link speed and duplex. Might be speed and duplex. Depending on controller. Set it to 100 Mbps / full duplex instead of auto / auto. See if that helps. You might also need to add that computer into the MAC filter list on your router to get it through your router.

Clare, try to make sure that your network adapter is set to automatically get an IP settings from the router (this is called DHCP). I believe this setting is under your TCP/IP properties.

Doing this will allow Vista to grab an IP address and DNS settings from the router.

I don't see how XP and Vista could conflict through the router. I have 3 XP, 1 Vista and 1 Linux PC at home, and there are no connectivity conflicts at least as far as connecting to the Internet.

You could also try the follwoing.

Go to network & sharing center

click manage network connections.

open your local area connection

double click tcp/ip

click advance

In defults gateways say add

put your routers ip address over there

Note := make sure your getting a DHCP Ip address from your router. the means on your network settings it should be stated as obtain ip address automaticaly
if this doenst work go to commad prompt and type ipconfig /all. and paste the results over here
