cannot restart print spooler error 5 permission denied

I was able to locate the spoolsv.exe file in system32 folder.

how big was it? maybe its currupt! (just a thought)see attached mine is vista premium 32bit.

have you ran sfc /scannow ?
is the printer set as default?

Here are the properties of spoolsv.exe;

Type of file: Application (exe)
Description: spoolsv.exe
Location: C\Windows\System32
Size: 123KB (125,952 bytes)
Size on disk: 124 KB (126,976 bytes)

The printer is not set as default because I am unable to add the printer without starting Spooler service and when I try to "Access is denied"

I appears to me something aint right with that file! it's a little smaller and has a different description , is your system 32bit?

mine is vista home premium, 32bit
If they are the same I can upload to MediaFire and you can download and install to your system32 folder....

I am running Vista Home Premium and 32bit.
I ran sfc /scannow and in CBS log found this;
CSI 00000137 [SR] Could not reproject corrupted file [ml:520{260},l:46{23}]"\??\C:\Windows\System32"\[l:22{11}]"spoolsv.exe"; source file in store is also corrupted
and
Cannot repair member file [l:22{11}]"spoolsv.exe" of Microsoft-Windows-Printing-Spooler-Core
It is a huge log and when i searched "Spoolsv" in the log there were about 30 hits.

Your suggestion sounds great, I actually feel like we are on the right path now.

Thanks, I was able to download the spoolsv.exe file, I attempted to rename the old file so that I could paste the new one in but was denied permission even as an admin.
I've googled how to gain permission to system32 files but have been unable to as of yet, any suggestions?

I dont think you should rename it! I would delete the corrupt one and replace with the good one....that being said I just uploaded a little regedit to MediaFire that should take care of any permissions issue's' just save it to desktop (or somewhere you can remember) double click it and run the program......good luck

Again thanks for quick reply, the download is a txt file? how do i run it, when i downloaded i saved it to downloads and appears as a txt file, what should i run it with?

sorry try this one it is a zip file, just right click it choose extract all. then run the extracted file...

I was able to run the .reg program but unsuccessful after in deleting the spoolsv.exe file, "destination folder access denied", "you need permission to perform this action" and "try again" ...

I just came across disabling UAC in Vista, is this a good idea to replace the file?

I downloaded an "Add_Take_Ownership.reg file" found on

and was able to delete and replace corrupt file, and also then able to start Spooler service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to run but will try to add my printer again later and post how things went.
