Solved Can I remove C:\Windows\winsxs

This removes the winsxs backups and uninstall information from the folder.

I was not aware that this does not work for Vista (happy to accept that this is the case, I'm not going to installing Vista ever again to find out!) but a search on this problem for Windows 7 also brings up this forum so hopefully it will help someone.
