BSOD while doing nothing

Can you confirm that you have updated all your drivers, and, chipset/video drivers.

This BSOD was most likely caused by memory, but it could also be caused by incompatible software including Anti-Virus software, not as conclusive as i would like.

Can you un-install "pc pit stop", and your anti-virus and any firewall, use windows firewall. This will eliminate the AVG parts.

This "DU Meter Service (DUMeterSvc) - Hagel Technologies Ltd", is it part of Dell or your ISP ?, if it's third party can you please un-install it.

This "System Requirements Lab", can you un-install this too.

This is all software that should run fine with Vista, but until this BSOD problem is fixed, then it's all suspect.

Try that, if it still blue screens, then remove all but one stick of ram, try it, then swap the ram, but only one stick at a time.

Your Bios is probably locked, so i guess you cant up the Voltage.

Thanks for the reply.

I've updated all but 2, those two will not update:

Ricoh Memory Stick Host = Version 6.0.1.10 - Updated: 6.03.00.0056
High Definition Audio Device = Version 6.0.6002.18005 - Updated: 6.10.0.6047

I've seen a few problems with the Ricoh Memory stick drivers in the past and the other laptop that I've got Windows 7 installed as totally different driver version (first version from 2006).

Du Meter is a program I purchased that works on all the other pc's fine - it monitors the traffic on my internet as 'm only allowed to download so much between certain times.

I've uninstalled them and will have a look at the memory sticks one by one.

BTW I only have AVG free so I use Windows Firewall.

have you tried running the memory sticks individually to see if its a faulty module

also you really need to stress test your memory to see if its stable Vista'a test only does so much , prime 95 set to stress the memory will sort the men from the boys ;) If your rams faulty that will BSOD your pc

also you say your rams differant speeds/ not normally an issue as it will default to the slowest but it could be incompatible , is it a new issue? have you had them modules running together long?

I'll have a look tomorrow at the individual sticks and see if that helps. But I read somewhere that using vista's memory tester could find a problem, but with using memtest as well and that coming out clear I thought no harm in trying.

I'm using that prime95 now and leave that to do its thing.

The 2 sticks of 512mb were with the laptop when I bought it. The 2GB was new but thats running fine now with the Windows 7, but when it was install with the vista I was getting BSOD's, thats when I thought to give W7 a try as someone said it could be that vista was unstable.

Prime95 just said 3 minutes into the test:
FATAL ERROR rounding was 0.5 expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected consult stress.txt file

ok tests all done but very puzzled.

Heres the test results:
Both 512MB in slots = Failed - hardware failure
1 x 512MB slot 1 = Pass after 24 hours testing
1 x 512MB slot 2 (2nd ram chip) = Pass after 24 - 25 hours of testing
Tried Both 512MB in slots again = Failed.

This is what the test stated:

[Nov 23 23:40] Worker starting
[Nov 23 23:40] Beginning a continuous self-test to check your computer.
[Nov 23 23:40] Please read stress.txt. Choose Test/Stop to end this test.
[Nov 23 23:40] Test 1, 4000 Lucas-Lehmer iterations of M19922945 using FFT length 1024K.
[Nov 23 23:55] FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
[Nov 23 23:55] Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.
[Nov 23 23:55] Torture Test ran 14 minutes - 1 errors, 0 warnings.
[Nov 23 23:55] Worker stopped.

So they're working on their own but when I place the 2 x 512MB in their slots the test always fails. But I haven't had any BSOD - so far.

Any help would be grateful.

Try one stick in one slot, if it works try the same stick in the next slot, repeat with other stick, it could be the slot itself that is faulty.

Thats what I've done, 1 stick in slot 1 and then took that out and tested 2nd stick in slot 2 and both passed on their own, but when I put them both in at the same tme thats when I got hardware failure on prime95.

My Computer

Just been looking at the specs of the laptop and just noticed the memory type.

Is it possible that bsod can be caused by if you have the wrong speed installed ??

The memory that the Dell 1525 supports is 667 - 800Mhz

but the memory that came with the laptop when I bought it is PC5300S - 555mhz

My Computer

It could upset things, although it should default to the slower speed.

Has it been Blue Screening since you had it, or has it just started ?.

Not that there is much you can do in your Bios, but can you confirm that it is set to default, normally F5 when in the Bios.

To be absolutely sure, and to eliminate the memory once and for all, i would fit the recommended memory, it doesn't need to be top of the range, but it does need to be within Dells guide lines.

If, or when, you get another BSOD, can you upload the minidump file, just to check we are still trying to debug the correct problem, thanks.

Far as I remember it was working fine, until after a few weeks or month and then it was a BSOD every other day. But after updating the drivers (except 2) it worked fine for another couple of weeks, then more BSOD's, sometimes while doing nothing or when I was on IE8 / Windows Mail.

I'll get some different memory and see if that helps.
