This happens randomly at times. I could be playing a game, and all of a sudden the computer freezes or the computer could be idle doing nothing. I have isolated the problem to PSU, Video Card, Motherboard, and CPU or Processor. If I could please have some assistance that would be greatly appreciated.

I said I isolated the problem to those 3 because I had 2 hard drives connected to the computer. My first hard drive (where Vista 64 is installed) is the master hard drive, and my second hard drive (where you Ubuntu 10.10 is installed) is the slave drive. I had this crash in both operating systems and hard drives. In addition, I have tested both hard drives individually; therefore, this removes: Anti-Virus, hard drives, and operating system. Also, I ran a memtest and the response was passed for several of them. I ran a couple of more times over night and still got the passed for all of them. As for the BSOD I have gotten this response all the time when the computer crashes. I am asking help here because out of the two operating systems Vista is the only one saying something and trying to find it. I hope some of this information helps.

What settings would it be beneficial for someone like yourself to determine whether the video card is the cause of the problem? from what I can remember the 2 options are stability and benchmark (currently in college with 1 hour class break). Also, what results would you like for me to post?

Also, I am not to sure on the results of the drivers. I may not know what I am doing or testing for those. But for the rest I have tested on my own, and with the help from a technical assistance (he only helped me reach this conclusion, and recommend me to try here since the only clues we had were from vista BSOD).

Well I ran the test for about 10 minutes, and didn't see any artifact or small freeze moments with the fur donut. Temperature wise the maximum was 89C. FPS max was 17, and core was 675 MHz. Finally, memory was 1008MHz.

My Computer

At what point in temperature do I cancel the test since it may be at risk of overheating? About 3 minutes into the test I got the flame icon with 52C next to temp 2 in SpeedFan. I am a little bit worried about leaving this running alone for 12 hours (I can't stare at for 12 hours), that little flame icon kind of has me worried about the leaving it running while I am at college.

My Computer

60 at the highest, but if the speed fan is showing a problem, stop it now.
The problem may be one of overheating.
That is a big cause of freeze.

Well, here is my complete hardware specs:

This is a desktop mostly used for Gaming/Typing papers:
Case: Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600 Brisbane 2.9GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor Model ADO5600DOBOX

RAM: 1 CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-8500C5

Video Card: 1 EVGA 256-P2-N761-TR GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

Hard Drives 1: Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Hard Drive 2:Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

Power Supply: OCZ StealthXStream OCZ600SXS 600W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready Active PFC Power Supply

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard

fans:
1.case: A rear-mounted 120mm TriCool fan as well as a top-mounted 140mm TriCool fan – both with 3-speed switch control – draw air through the case (I have both fans set to high, and both are working as external fans).

2.videocard: 1 fan
3.powersupply: 1 fan
4. processor: 1 fan.
Can this happen even when the computer is idle? or perhaps there is already damage from overheating?

Any recommendations? Should I replace the cpu? or should I install more fans? (there is room for 3 more fans in this Antec 300 case. One on the other side of the cpu, and the other 2 in lower front area.)

My Computer

What I would do is check on line or in your computer manual to get the suggested heat range for your particular computer. Every computer is different and then make sure it is not an over heating problem. If you recall with the cpu test, you showed conceren about overheating, I cannot and would not disagree; do you know how I would feel if you said that there had been damage because of something I told you to do.
Bottom line find out the specifics for your particular computer and then run the cpu test, and in addition make sure that overheating was not the cause of the original problem. You can use the computer normally and use the speed fan to detect problems.

Thats what I would do. Almost anything can be corrected, but overheating causes expensive damage. We want to be sure that does not happen to you. But, we may have to test to the limits to correct your problem.

Yeah same report as last time, right? Well, I decided to run the test overnight, and went ahead and did some research on the cpu's temperature since the manual does not include it. For maximum temperature for the AMD Athlond 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ I got 55-70C (AMD Processors for Desktops: AMD Phenom).

How do you suggest I proceed?

(Also, I know I came here for help, but this forum post is kind of interesting pertaining to my problem: AMD Processors Forums - AMD Athalon 64 X2 5600+ Overheating The only difference is that my CPU or most of the hardware in the case does not feel warm. In addition, instead of a beeping sound upon powering it on after several hours, I get a small vroom! type of noise kind of like a mini version of starting up a car. Also, I am able to use the computer normally most of the time after I get the BSOD.)

My Computer

Well, I think that you should proceed with the test. You now know the upper limits of temperture that the computer can safely handle. When it gets to a point that you feel that is unsafe and may cause problems, I would discontinue the test and assume that the BSOds are from overheating. I feel uncomfortable giving you a number, since you are the best judge. When it reaches a number that makes your uncomfortable, does it feel very warm/hot?

After several hours is it the fan that makes a noise as it starts working at top speed?

We are working with your assumptions, that it is hardware. The reports indicate that hardware may be a cause, but give other scenarios, too.

Assuming that it is hardware (comes from you). Here is our best thread on code 124 which is almost always hardware. Read, get ideas and maybe it will help. I hope so

Does it need to run for 12 hours in order for me to assume it may be overheating? I wish I could, but I cannot monitor the computer for that entire time. lol

My Computer

Twelve hours is the recommened time, unless errors occur earlier. I think that the correct answer to your question is the longer the better. Even with 12 hours the answer is not definitive and if less time is used the accuracy becomes even less guaranteed. My suggestion is try to get a close to 12 hours as you can. I suggest that with a test like this you try to keep an eye on it for problems that may develope.
Other than a simple memory test, I know I would not leave my computer unattended.

Some additional informtion, which may be of interest.
