Hi
I have a one year old dell inspiron 6400 with Vista Home Premium, OEM version. Though I have lost the all the CDs that go with it, I have managed to keep a copy of the Licence key.
Anyway, my laptop has been shutting down and freezing for ages, so I decided to try and compress partition via the cmd line and then was going to install 'Ubuntu'. I think that I have managed to compress the areas with the bootmgr. Of course, I cannot be sure, because the system had been acting strange for months. Also, my CD/DVD drive has not been working, so I recently attached an external CD/DVD drive which I can verify worked fine with it for a few days before this situation.
So now when I try and boot up my laptop, I get a black screen, with the white text:
"BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" and when I press Ctrl +Alt+Del, there are just two options : F2 (bios menu) and F12 (boot up order). Both of these options do not seem to help.
I am trying to boot up using Ubuntu, but nothing happens. Not sure if the external CD/DVD drive is being recognised. Is there any way, I can get a cmd line up ? I have download the Vista Repair Disk but it does not work.
Is this fixable ?
Do I have to replace the hard drive ?
What can I do ?
I do have working USB sockets for memory sticks (well they definitely used to work). Has anyone tried to boot up this way ?
Please help !
