Blue Screen

Hello,

I've been having serious problems with my system. My computer has been going into the blue screen every other hour since yesterday. Before the total crash, I usually get a message that some Host service system stopped working and was shut down. Then, some time later, the whole system crashes into the BSOD.

I checked the event log and found many reported erros within the hour before the crash.

In the list, there are errors fom "svchost", "eventlog", "WMI", "volmgr", and many errors from "event log provider for the manager of service control".

I would appreciate getting some help to get this fixed. What other specific info could I provide?

Thank you,
Daniel.

EDIT:
PS1: I use Norton and I've just run a complete scan. I also use Advance System Care for cleaning and optimizing the system.
PS2: I use PostgreSQL and suspect the problems might be related to that, but have no clue how to proceed.

Josh, until I get it, use the one that I used and tell the poster it is for Vista, too. It asks for a lot more information.

Here it goes.

Extra info:
- Vista Home Edition (service pack2)
- OS reinstalled about 4 months ago.
- OEM, but I used a CD provided by the manufacturer for formatting
- Hardware is 1.6 year old.

I'm still having troubles with the machine. I keep gettting a frequent error message in windows: "The host of windows services has stopped working". And from time to time, the BSOD.

Many thanks in advance,
Daniel.

Ok, I just realized the attatchments didn't work. The HTML that I was asked to upload is listed as invalid format by the forum.

The compressed files are not accepted either. I tried using RAR and the free version of winzip, which saved my files as ZIPX - invalid format also.

Sorry for being such a newbie, but how am I supposed to upload these files? Will I have to buy WINZIP or something?

Hi rich,

Now I think got it right. Once again, sorry for demanding such basic explanations and thanks a lot.

I hope the files can give you a clue of what is going on with my system.

Awaiting further instructions,
Daniel.

First, congrats you win the BSOD prize. You have, by far, the most dump reports than anyone else I helped. Must be 50 there.

I looked at the last 10 and to be honest, quickly. Out of 10 reports you had 8 different causes as the source of the BSOD; usually this means a hardware problem, lets start there with the most likely cause. Memory.

Download and memtest86. Run it for at least 6 passes. Then with a known good stick test each MB socket and make sure it works.
Check the thread now and then, because even before I get your report, I may add to your analysis. There are so many things that I can have you do with all those reports.

haha, definitely not the prize I was looking for.

I'm working on the memory test at the moment. I'll try to give you a little more info about the machine in case it helps you.

The only thing that comes to mind is that this machine has been troublesome for a while and the earlier crashes seemed to be related to problems with the NVIDIA mother board and the Video Drivers. I wonder if you can amke anything out of that.

I'll report again as soon as the memtest is done.

Hi rich,

I have finally finished the test.

1 - The inside of the machine was incredibly dirty so I took it to a specialized shop for a throrough cleansing.
2 - Helped by the technician, I then found out that one of the slots of the memory cards isn't working at all. I ran the memtest you suggested and the memory cards passed it.

I am now running with only one of the Ram cards to see how the system does.

This seems to be a problem in the motherboard, I suppose. Is there any further tests I should attempt? Or is my only choice now to get a new motherboard?

Thank you,
Daniel.

Memtest was the first thing that I suggested. If the ram is bad you buy ram. You must run each stick separately and then with a known good stick test each slot on the MB.
Each with 6 passes.

If you fail using the above method, time for new MB
If you pass, I ask myself, did the technician have an ulterior motive?

The ram is good, it passed the test. By 6 passes do you mean I should run the whole test 6 times for each stick? (I ran it with one stick at a time, but only once with each stick)

What we found out is that in one of the slots, none of the ram worked. The computer wouldn't start up. In the other slot, both ram sticks worked just fine.

My Computer

Yes each stick 6 times to be sure. But if you are sure its a bad slot. Then you must replace.

BTW. Microsoft considers a new computer, a new MB. If your OS is a OEM or an upgrade you may have to call and fight to get the OS reactivated. Most members say they will comply with the request.

Be sure your computer has enough RAM space to store all that data.

I like playing a LOT of video games. I also like to play with friends, study to learn, and learn new things. :)
Hi rich,

I'm running the mem tests myself. The first card got through the passes, now I'm starting witht the second card.

I also tested each one of the slots individually myself and, actually, both of them seem to be working fine.

Once the report for the 2nd mem card is out I'll post the results and get further instruction.
