Blocked Administrator Account

I tried to change my SID number (Security Identifier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) with a program called newsid.exe (NewSID v4.10) and it closed out before it was done. Before this happened, I had only one account named 'Rhodes' with administrative privileges and no password. Then I restarted my computer and it had an account named 'Rhodes' and an account name 'Other User'. I clicked on Rhodes (it still had no password) and it went to my desktop but the desktop looked like it was when I first got it, at factory default settings. Everything I had downloaded was gone, including my music, programs, and pictures. All my settings had been reset to default. And administrative rights were gone. The first thing I did was look at my Users in Control Panel and all I saw was 'Rhodes' and disabled 'Guest'. I didn't see 'Other User' here so I went and looked on my C Drive and found the 'Users' folder and checked in there. It has a 'Rhodes' and a 'Rhodes.RhodesPC'. If I click on 'Rhodes' it tells me I don't have permission to access this folder. If I click on Rhodes.RhodesPC it brings me to the folders of the account I am currently on (the 'Rhodes' without administrative privileges). I have tried creating a new administrator account a few different ways (including an elevated command prompt in safe mode) but I can't get anything to work. And I can't get to the hidden administrator account in Vista, I tried that too. What I'd like to do is gain access to my old 'Rhodes' account, the one with administrative rights. I tried System Restore but I get the error 'There was an unexpected error: Class not reigstered (0x80040154) Please close System Restore and try again.' Any help is appreciated.

With your user account's SID number messed up like that, it looks like the only option may be to do a factory restore of Vista.

This may not work but won't hurt ( I hope )

type below to a CMD prompt to turn off admin:
net user administrator /active:no



to turn on admin:
net user administrator /active:yes

Can you create a new account with Administrator privileges from within the new Rhodes.RhodesPC account? This way, if there's something "off" with the new Rhodes.RhodesPC account you can start with a fresh account.

Once in the new account, access the Rhodes account (the one that says "access denied") in an elevated instance of Windows Explorer. To do this, go to Start and type in "windows explorer" (without the quotes). At the top of the search box will be an entry for Windows Explorer - right click on this and select "Run as administrator"

Navigate to the access denied account, right click on it and select "Properties"
Then click on the Security tab, then on the Advanced button.
Then select the Owner tab, then on the Edit button
Left click once on your current user name.
Place a checkmark in the box that says "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"
Then click on Apply and let it run. When it's done, click on OK to exit all of the dialogs.

You should then be able to access the data in that account. Copy the data (and only the data) over to your new account (the one that you're currently using). Do not copy over any settings in case the SID change had made changes in them.

Once you're satisfied that you've got everything, you can delete the other account from the User Accounts dialog - and can delete the other account folder in Windows Explorer.

I'd rather stay with this limited account than do a factory restore because I've already customized this account the way I want and did my best without admin rights.

I tried the net user administrator commands already in a command prompt, and an elevated command prompt in safe mode and they didn't work.

I couldn't create a new administrator account from the several ways I tried. I let a Microsoft Support 'Professional' remotely connect to my desktop and try to create an admin account to no prevail and at the end of the conversation he told me the same thing Brink told me.
