atikmdag stopped responding then recovered

Just had this not responding issue for first time tonight.
I haven't much investigated it yet, seems like there is a plethora of solutions with none perfect.
Oh well, I just hope it doesn't become a recurring one like some have had.
Bought brand new system a month ago.
Card is 4850.

hey guys,
im having this problem too. ive only got one 32" display but have all the latest drivers and even if im not in a game then it will either go black or BSOD me :(

not in the bt of moods as it just did this and i lost my work :(

i think having the transparent effects on vista enabled makes it more likely to happen and if i overclock my CPU then it will happen every time i go into a game, image editing program, ect.

i know this thread is old but i just though id bring it back to life :)

BTW i have a HD4670

Hi Storm08.

As your overclocking we will need to see some info to be able to help you. Download CPUID and CPUID

Take screenshots of all the tabs on cpu-z and post them here along with a screenshot of HWmonitor open so we can see all the values

this happens when your card's temperature is above a "stable limit" OR you are using a beta video driver. in both case, when vista detects the GPU harderrors, it rebuilds the internal memory structure for rendering. this ultimately blacks out your screen and then recovers with a popup-bubble.

What you should do:
1. check if you have overclocked your card too much. lower the frequency can help alot.
2. check if your card is messed with heavy dust, if so, clean them up.
3. check if your power supply is enough to support your system. if so, go change one.
4. check if you're using a beta driver (usually no WQHL mark), if so, upgrade it.
5. take your PC to your vender asking them to fix the problem for u.

cheers,
Dex

I had the same symptoms. occasional messages then a succession of several one after another, then the computer reboots with blue screen. My system is a Dell Vostro.

Solution was to install rivatuner. Now as soon as I get one of the messages I start up rivatuner and switch the fan on. It no longer crashes.

So for me anyway it was an overheating issue - the preset settings for the card don't cool it enough on my system so you have to override them when it gets too hot.

It took a bit of detective work to find out how to switch on the fan after you install rivatuner. What you have to do is to click on the diagonally pointing arrow next to Customize... below the droplist of graphics cards. Then select the first image in the image strip popup, showing a graphics card tab. Then select Fan. Then I set it to fixed, then 50% or thereabouts until the fan cools down, might need to be higher if your system is hotter.

Looking at the other solutions mentioned here, I wonder if perhaps many of them work by making sure the graphics card has less work to do. In my case I have two monitors connected to it which may be why it overheats easily on a warm day. I also wondered if the solutions that involve changing the driver also indirectly change some of the settings so that the card has less work to do. Perhaps those with the tools, hardware and expertise to investigate could look into this? Just a thought.

Robert
