Solved Associate .doc and .docx with Microsoft office word 2007.

I finally got the attachment to show up (it shows up twice). See my last post.

What does it show in the .ddeexec sub key?

Thanks Wither 3,

When I said "It is not in Word.OpenDocumentText.12, but it is in Word.document.12"
I meant the strange key - "MKKSkWordFiles."

In HKEY_ClASSES_ROOT
The registry path for Word.OpenDocumentText.12 > shell > Open > Command is"
Default REG_SZ "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.EXE" /n/dde
That looks to be identical with yours

The ddeexec Default Type is REG_SZ Data is [REM_DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]
Under that
Application is
Default Type is REG_SZ Data is WinWord
Topic is
Default Type is REG_SZ Data is System

I may be re-installing Office 2007. I am reluctant to do so because I have seen others report problems on re-install. Also, I would lose all the quick access toolbar changes that I have made.

If you go here-

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.docx or the .....doc, what is shown?

I was thinking you could have run the Set Default Programs in Default Programs but Word isn't listed. I don't know how to add software to that list.

Additional information.
I have found if I open Word, then open Windows explorer and click on a .doc or a .docx, the file will open.
If I close that word and try to open a second file the error occurs as before.
If I keep word open I can click as many .doc or .docx files as I want from explorer and they will open.
There must be a simple fix for this problem but I can't find it. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

Wither 3,
Yes, both .doc and .docx show Microsoft Office Word as Current default in Defaults Program

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.docx or the .....doc, what is shown?

.doc (Default) REG_SZ Word.Document.8
Content Type REG_SZ application/msword

.docx (Default) REG_SZ Word.Document.12
Content Type REG_SZ application/msword
PreceivedType REG_SZ document

My Computer

I'm on win 7 right now and the Content Type for docx is different than what you indicated. I'll check my Vista machine tomorrow.

Hello,
I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to correct a problem in Word 2007 where I could not open a word file from Windows Explorer.
I finally elected to work around the problem by opening Word first and then, with Word open, use Explorer to open the desired file.
This worked fine but it was a little inconvenient. I believe the problem was in some registry entries that I had messed up.
Now, a miracle has occurred. Since the Windows update of 10/15/2014, Word works like it used to.
I can only conclude that the update in KB2883031 or KB2883032 fixed the problem.
Thanks to all of those patient people who worked on this problem.
Frank C
