Resolved aro 2011 vs ccleaner ? malwarebytes instead ?

I mentioned at work someone I knew had gotten a trojan on their home cmoputer. I then said I was going to buy malwarebytes and clean their computer.

One of the other IT people told me to use aro 2011 instead.

Well, I think he misunderstood as aro 2011 is a registry cleaner. Is ccleaner better than aro 2011 ?

I'm still thinking of gettnig malwarebytes anti-malware cleaner to fix the computer. Computer cannot find the modem, popups all over the screen. Hmm. Not sure if the computer is Vista home or Win 7 home.

I haven't looked at the infected computer yet. That will happen on Saturday.

Sorry if this sounds confusing. I'm confused.

This is what you do
Forget regsitry cleaners
Get microsoft security essentials or another equally good anti virus, let it make a full scan and then set it for real time protection
Get the free version of malwarebytes and run a full scan

Reg cleaners do more harm than good with Vista.

After the malware is gone, maintain your computer
To maintain your computer

Steps that I did not notice on the guide include:

Running a scan disc before doing a defrag

Using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

Making System Restore points, at least once a week

Makaing a system Image once a month (varies by user)

Not relying on your A/V common sense, should prevail. You know of many sites can cause a problem.

Do not use any reg cleaning or optimizing software.

Download and use Ccleaner about once every two months. Untick any registry entries.

Hello I agree with rich 100% on malwarebytes and leave your registry alone, registry will do more harm then good I am a prime example, before I really knew anything about the computer system and how it runs I used one for a year and when I decided not to renew and uninstalled there software it uninstalled more then it should have and the finally result was a bad system crash. I like CCleaner just don't use the registry cleaner bad karma if you know what I mean...LOL

It did find a program listing I had uninstalled over a year ago. Wasn't listed in the registry, but the cleaner found it. That I left it remove.

Had to wait for the battery to charge. Running malware bytes free right now. Got some errors during install, but I figured it was the trojan trying to fake me out.

It is shuttting off due to overheating. Runs about half a second, then shuts off, repeat.

So I'll look up the 'take it apart' instructions and look for dust. Probably won't get to this part today.

Doesn't stayup long enough to run anything... had time to run/install Malwarebytes then it wouldn't stay up.

I might get the relative an early Christmas present by getting them a laptop cooling pad with fan.

I noticed some small brown dust particles along the edges of some air vents.

Nothing appears to be clogged form the outside. Get some canned air tomorrow.

Okay. I bought canned air to clean it.

Found the port for the CPu fan, I can hear it spin quickly when I spray.

No dust comes out.

Still runs no more than 1 second when I turn it on, shuts off, turns on for 1 second, repeat.

One of my coworkers suggested a bootblock virus.

So I have an external drive case I can put the laptop drive in, and run an anti-virus on it. I have an old laptop. I will see if the external case will work on it. I'll be installing Ubuntu on my old laptop, so I am not worried about it getting infected.

I did find Toshiba laptop 'take it apart' guides on the 'net.

I might try that, to see if the CPU's heat sink is clogged... but it doesn't seem to me that the cpu heat sink can be clogged and shutting off the laptop due to over heat. The laptop was off for 3 days, and still shuts off with less than a second of on time.

I'll post again when I learn more.

Hello when using canned air, for cleaning inside your system use it with short burts not long burts...

Well, I didn't make the burst too long. I heard it spinning up rather quickly. So the fan sounds fine.

I'll work on it as I have time. Relatives want me to come over tomorrow, so I won't be working on it much this weekend.

About to take the laptop apart. I found this site you may find useful. Disassembly instrctions for various models of Toshiba laptops.
Disassemble, repair, take apart, upgrade, clean Toshiba laptop or notebook yourself.

Tiny cables under the keyboard... very tiny flat cables. Not going to undo them. I can lift the plate under the keyboard up just enough to see that there is no dust around the cpu.

The web site I found left out that the 5 screws inside the battery compartment that hold the top assembly to the bottom assembly. Those have to be removed to get the top off of the laptop.

So, it looks like it might be hard drive issues. A boot block virus, bad hard drive, etc.
