With simple Air cooling I've seen people getting STABLE clocks like this.
i7 920 around 3.6-3.8 Ghz or more with extreme Air cooling. and around 4.3 Ghz with Phase.
i7 940 3.8-4.0 and higher with Phase and stuff.
i7 965 I watched my friend push it to 4.0 Ghz with Ease. it was FREE. then 4.2 ghz was a little harder. and 4.3 Ghz he never got to boot the first day. but I'm sure it's doable if you dare to give that much voltage.
I'm personally waiting to move to i7 intil the 32nm chips drop. the 2nd Gen Nehalem chips. Or waiting til Intel releases the better chips. I've been told they have gaming chips that are better than current releases they are holding out on. Just like they waited forever to drop Q9650.. and mine rocks 4.205 Ghz with no worries.. lol
I might not even switch becuase what I have now runs circles around most. I love this chip.
either way let us know. and PLEASE post pics if you go Core i7
Even though I'm currently looking at an i7 system, it now appears I won't be getting it till the first quater of 09
At least by that time prices "may" drop and maybe better chips will be available.
As for overclocking, that's good news to hear. I'm a modest overclocker, so air cooling with a performance CPU cooler is good enough for me as I won't be going too far past the chips speed.
My current system is a little over a year old so I guess I'll have to stick with it till then.
I just got the i7 920 with a Asus P6T Deluxe O/C palm mobo and 6gigs of 1600mhz triple channel ram. It is very impressive so far, I wasn't going to OC yet until i got a socket 1366 bracket for my water cooling block but decided to give it a quick go with the stock Intel cooler. I'm now cruising at 3.5Ghz and thats not even pushing it or even trying, i just went into the bios and tried a couple settings and came up with 3.5Ghz. I think it may even be capable of nearly 4Ghz on the stock cooler, who knows. My temps are 33 degrees idle and 58 load.
I'll post back tomorrow after i've finished playing some more.
