anyone ever get a "cease and desist" letter from their isp?

Yup I have, my ISP sent me an actual letter to cease and desist or they would shutdown my services. They said I was using an average of 200GB a month for the past three months and my limit is supposed to be 60GB.
If I could buy everything then I would but anime is kind of scarce were I live and at least half of that was from sharing Linux distro's (mostly Ubuntu)

lol, fair enough It's one thing to get a letter from some third-party organization. They're easy to ignore. It's a different matter when it's your ISP wielding the stick...

yeah, technically it wasn't from my isp, as they were not the originators, but my isp is the one whom i received it from--
what concerned me more was the prospect of losing my service over piddling some studio off

Well your ISP will always be a part of it, as the third party companies will usually trace the IP address to your ISP and then get your contact details off of them.

Not quite. They forward what they have to your ISP (an IP address and what was downloaded/uploaded) and your ISP forwards it to you (the letter), or whoever happened to have the IP address that was caught at the time (which means you could theoretically get one of those letters and never have downloaded anything).

They forward what they have to your ISP (an IP address and what was downloaded/uploaded) and your ISP forwards it to you (the letter), or whoever happened to have the IP address that was caught at the time (which means you could theoretically get one of those letters and never have downloaded anything).

But they contact your ISP for all your data. PC Gamer wrote a report about it and interviewed Davenport Lyons who are tracking down downloaders. They identify users by contacting their ISP, and then look at what's been downloaded/uploaded.

They might do that sort of thing in the UK, but they start running into privacy issues if they try doing that over here in Canada and the US.

I have never gotten a letter or warning or anything like that :D.

But I've only been downloading for a couple months...
