it was a letter from a 3d party representing a hollywood studio sent to my isp, just stating basically that my ip address was "seen" downloading content i should not have downloading. the letter asked me to reply and state that i have deleted the content from my computer and that i won't do it again.

my isp specifically stated that if engaged in anymore activity then i could face losing my service and much more.

stopped my downloading--for real.

Yup yup, defiantly yup lol. If I had all the money in the world I'd buy every CD and DVD that I wanted, but, I don't have that much cash. I still buy plenty, but downloading has been known to fill in the gaps. Years and years ago I got a naughty letter from downloading a cam of "The Cat In The Hat"! The movie was insanely horrible, so it had been long long deleted by the time I got the letter. I did the only thing that you really should do when you get those letters, I ignored it. Any response you give them is simply a admission of "guilt." Hasn't stopped me from downloading, or, for that matter, buying CDs or DVDs. Because of the ability to download movies I'd never have a chance to see in the theater (or at all, if they are direct to video), I probably buy MORE DVDs than I would if I didn't download them first.

My Computer

No, but I don't download anything like that. I sympathize with the owners of the rights, but nevertheless hate the behavior of the music and film industry. Just got myself a HD PRV. If I try to record HD material it stops after 29 minutes, and I have to restart. There is no way to transfer anything recorded to a Blueray recorder, not that there are any Blueray recorders for TV. Must be the industry blocking this, tech is obviously there.

I refuse to buy films and records, until they behave decently.

must be an american thing, huh?

seems everyone who's flag is not usa is like, "HELL NO! AND I WOULD NEVER DO SUCH A DESPICABLE THING EITHER!!" "YOU DAMN YANKEES!"
just a question asking, that's all. no need to be "Holier Than Thou."

yeah, i downloaded a few movies and music. i got the letter and stopped--just wanted to know if anyone else has too.

but, i suppose, the issue could be a little deeper than a movie or music or application being downloaded. we can all adhere to a certain rule when it's the "in thing" to do or politically correct to do so. but other rules are looked at as archaic or unnecessary, we don't give a damn about them. "Why do I need to limit my speed to 85mph when I'm in the middle of the desert and I see that there is no traffic?" see, if i'm late for an appointment, i will definitely drive faster than the posted speed limit to get to where i need to get to! i know the risk involved in speeding, but i'll still do it. don't misunderstand me, though, i don't need to download a movie, a cd, or an application either; i knew the risk involved with doing so and i stopped when i got the letter.

anyway... i'm a bad, bad man. forgive me for my misgivings and sins.

Well, I havent got a letter saying stop downloading or else, or anything upon them lines, the people that have said no, have probably had a fair usage policy posted through their letterbox, but none saying stop what your doing. I know from personal experience that I have never had a letter like that. but I have been charged for downloading too much(fair usage), it's a simple way of doing things really, with BT(british telecom) their broadband service is subject to a fair usage policy and instead of penalising the minority, they make it fair for all, I had a limit of 40GB a month to download on the highest package and I did download 80GB once, and got charged £1 for every extra 1GB, seems fair to me, other countries aren't as "harsh" on downloading as the US.

It will also available to the government, who will be able to find out about everything going to and from your pc.

They are using the complaints of the Music industry to justify it.

I do not download music and movies.

indeed, I do agree with you, as ive voted and said no, I do NOT download illegal versions of anything, haven't done since limewire was popular(and that was a fair while ago), the fair usage policy isn't focused directly on heavy p2p downloaders, it's focused on people hogging bandwidth, i watch a lot of movies on SKY player(which is similar to watching NBC or a show online) which is perfectly legal, and I also watch live streams of TV shows on the channels website, ie/ http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone/watchlive/http://www.bbc.co.uk/tv . which is also not illegal, thats where i get slammed for bandwidth hogging as these services do require a lot of bandwidth. No illegal activity here, no need to with all this free stuff.

I don't think you're breaking anything if you own the DVD. If you own it, then you can make copies for personal use i.e. putting it on your iPod.

Nope. Never. Which isn't suprising, because I don't download or even watch porn.

must be an american thing, huh?

seems everyone who's flag is not usa is like, "HELL NO!

Who's being Holier Than Thou, I know I'm not just because I said No.

I've got enough movies and music that I've bought or had bought for me, half of which I've not played or watched, I certainly have no need or desire to download any so no I've never had such a letter. ;)
