Another 4gb Vista 64bit problem

I've just built my new pc and am already having problems.

Vista 64 installed fine however it will give a bsod when booting. The strange thing is it happens at the exact same spot every time. While booting the first low res green bar appears the slides left to right. THen the screen goes black. Instead of displaying the vista logo in the middle I see a bsod flash up and the system reboots.

After a few goes it will boot properly and then run fine for hours.

I've tried 2 different sets of RAM and both do the same thing. If I go down to 2gb it seems to be fine.

I've seen the other thread, but its over 60 pages long!
Any suggestions?

Its a Corsair 520W HX.
I've got 2 500gb hard disks, a Hauppage HVR4000 installed and 2 fans.

Is the Corsair powerful enough?

I had a similar problem with my system. I'm running a 790i mobo, but heres how I fixed it:

1) Put the ram in the other slots (1&3 rather than 0&2)
2) Got the system stable by running just one stick, adjusting the timings and voltages.
3) Turned off the pc, added 2nd stick, reset CMOS via mobo jumper
4) Power on, went into BIOS and put the proper timings/voltages back on (before vista boots once)

When I turned it back on everything worked great and the system has been stable ever since (with the exception of this little virus I picked up).

Like I said, I'm using a very different mobo than you are. I never would have thought that resetting the CMOS would have helped, but it did. The timings/voltages are very important too. Make sure everything is running like it should (according to specs).

12V combined is 40A or 480W. Should be OK. Reset the CMOS to default timing and reseat the RAM. Memtest86 is a good program to test each stick one at a time.

What is the message on your BSOD?
These usually give specific codes and sometimes an actual module name that can be traced for the cause.

Next time you get the BSOD please copy all of the info as seen and post it here, maybe we can gleen a little info from it.
It sure sounds like a hardware driver tho.

Another thing you can do is boot to Safe Mode and then open msconfig (click start, type msconfig, click on msconfig.exe). Now click the Diagnostic Startup on the General tab and try rebooting normally a few times. If you do not get any BSOD's then it's a 3rd party driver causing this BSOD and by gng to Selective Startup and loading one item at a time, rebooting between each loaded item, you can eliminate others and find the real culprit when the BSOD returns.

My gut feeling is the Asus 8600GT card causing the problem.

Quite possibly my friend...gut feelings usually turn out to be fairly accurate sometimes. But then you put the "Another 4gb" in your post title, did you think it may be due to the 4G issues that plagued us users for awhile too? This one doesn't sound like that is the case, I think we'll probably find it's a device driver and quite possibly a high device like the graphics card...never know tho.

Not quite. Mine would freeze during the BIOS or POST about 50% of the time, the rest of the time it would freeze and go black on the windows loading screen but it never actually flashed a BSOD at me. Could be a difference in motherboards, or it could be a different problem entirely.

Just thought I'd throw in a similar experience to see if perhaps the same solution would work.

Vista 64 before ANY updates worked FINE for me with 4GB.. so not sure.. Although I've heard many many people saying that it's tempermental with 4GB and to try only using 1 stick until everything is up and going, and stable. Then add the second.. Also make sure that all the Timings are at Spec.. or less in your system.. if you got 4GB 1066.. lower it to 800.. then try.. Have you ram Memtest to check ur memory.. maybe one stick is bad.

I installed Vista x64 Ultimate in 18 minutes with 8 x 2 GB Kingston ECC DDR-667 modules with no problems.

Download and test with memtest86 one stick at a time. Verify your board supports that RAM. Make sure not to overclock. Reset BIOS to default timing. Upgrade the BIOS to the latest rev.

That could be true if I had all four slots occupied. I have two 2GB sticks and a 680i LT SLI.

SO, then your post should have been that many 680i mobos experience problems installing Vista x64 with 4 GB RAM - not that Vista does not work with 4 GB RAM.

No offense, but posts like that are cannon fodder for all the Vista haters- I had one skeptic turn me on to 4 of those same posts and tell me that it was proof that Vista wasn't worth the upgrade....

Ok, maybe I should have been more clear. In my experience, Vista x64 doesn't work without that patch if you have 4GB+ of memory.

Ok I'm back home and was able to try resetting the CMOS. That didnt thelp.

The BSOD error is REGISTRY_ERROR

A quick google suggests some sort of IO problem.
I'm using the Gigabyte RAID driver rather than an Intel one.

I'm using RAID0 maybe I've set something incorrectly in my BIOS?
